4H girls enjoy Colorado exchange trip
V
Four Morrow County girls enjoyed a ten-day 4-H exchange
program to Colorado last week.
"Colorado or Bust" was the motto of Pam Cantin, Jan
Peterson, Lori and Kay Bergstrom, four Morrow County
4H'ers that took a bus ride, along with other Oregon 4H'ers to
Mesa County, Colorado.
The girls' trip and tour covered plenty of ground and flash
bulbs and shutters were clicking each day on the greyhound
trip.
On their way to Colorado, the bus traveled through the
states of Idaho, Utah and Wyoming. The girls reported that
many stops were taken because "everyone had become a
camera bug."
Among the sites the girls saw were a tourist stop in the
middle of the Wyoming desert called Little America. Little
America was a sheepherders dream. He built the attraction
after being stopped in a blizzard with no place to stay.
In Denver, the girls took a tour of the U.S. Mint and the
largest feedlot in the world was toured at Monfort. Monfort's
production boasted of the "best quality beef" and on that
day, cattle numbered more than 75,000 head.
A tour of the Garden of the Gods was found interesting by
the girls as they witnessed Mother Nature's beauty. Water
and wind has eroded stones into amazing shapes at the
attraction.
The girls muscular efforts at trying to budge a balancing
rock was to no avail.
The U.S. Air Force Academy's church was visited too. The
girls called the church "beautiful" and said that Protestant,
Catholic and Jewis churches were all under the same roof.
A planetarium program was shown at the academy,
showing the years of space exploration.
Later, walking across the Royal Gorge near Canon City,
the Arkansas River could be seen from the world's highest
bridge. The river the girls said, twisted and winded
thousands of feet below.

if the proposals from two large
firms jell.
Two Northwest firms say
they plan to begin commercial
and residential development
on 680 acres of land recently
annexed into the city.
The project is a joint
venture of Columbia Pacific
Resources, Inc. of Richland
and Fuhrman Development
Co.,. of Portland.
The land was purchased
from Oregon Potato, Inc. of
Boardman. The purchase,
OPI officials say, will not
effect the potato growers.
The first phase of the
development will be the build
ing of commercial structures,
houses, multi-family dwell
ings and mobile home parks
on 270 acres.
The first phase is expected
to cost around $5 million,
representatives of the two
firms say. The Oregon Bank is
financing the construction. " 5

A tramway ride entertained the girls at Monarch Pass
where at the top, the Continental Divide and tops of the
Rocky Mountains could be viewed.
When the bus finally rolled into Mesa County, the host
families presented the Morrow County group with a "key to
the county."
Each 4H'er met their host family and after enjoying a
group picnic, all the girls went their separate ways for five
days of living on a new ranch with new friends.
Most of the ranches, the girls reported, raised livestock,
alfalfa, Coors barley, corn and plenty of orchard fruit. The
host homes were located near the longest mountain in the
world, Grand Mesa. The mountain had more than 100 lakes
on top of it for fishing and recreation.
Leaving their host families was hard for the girls but they
vowed to return.
On the trip home, more visitor highlights were seen,
including the Temple Square at Salt lake City.
Plans for next summer are for the Mesa County 4H'ers to
visit Morrow County on the exchange program.
