Over 200 enthusiastic people attended the Hardman
Reunion according to Blanche Wise who helped host the
' reunon for the Howell family.
There were guests from all the states and almost every city
in the State of Oregon. Mabel Howell, Monument, was
presented a birthday cake while the crowd sang "Happy
Birthday" to her on her 82nd birthday.
Hardman school alumni from 1912 to 1943 attended. Almost
every class was represented. The Class of 1926 all showed up .
for the reunion, all four: Lucie Williams Swanson, Eugene;
Lee Merrill Bleakman. Beaverton; Neal Knighton,
Kennewick, and Kenneth Batty, Heppner. On the Saturday,
evening before, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Batty hosted a dinner
party for Kenneth's classmates. Guests included Mr. Percy
Merril and Hazel Hayes Bennett, Stayton.
Wayne Leathers, Kimberly, was the master of ceremonies
for the reunion, announcing to everyone, "his degree came
from Hardman University." His great talent for MC'ing the
reunion always contributes to this successful event.
Contributing the music for the dancing and listening
enjoyment was a band from Hermiston, no-one seemed to get
their name.
The McDaniel family will host the 1977 Hardman reunion.
Everyone will be staying home this fourth (hopefully) to
help make our celebration a big success. Over $1,500 has been
spent buying food for the dinner at the fairgrounds.
Breakfast will begin at 7 a.m. with the dedication of the
Democrat Gulch Schoolhouse and Hager Park.
' Calf roping and ball games are scheduled for the afternoon.
, The closing of the fun-filled day will be the fireworks and
1 music.
Juanita Carmichael has undergone open heart surgery at
St. Vincents Hospital, Portland.
I I was reading an article on how an umpire figures he calls
about 95 per cent right. Someday when time allows, maybe
' I'll figure out our percentage. But right now a correction is
needed in the Morrow County Fair book. Turn to the page
that has the names of the Fair committees listed. Alvin
; McCabe is not listed with 'he committe. Eight? Well, now you
all know that his name was not listed, but he is on the
, committee. Speaking of the fair, now is the time to be pruning
back your flowers, so they will be ready for the fair in
' August.
. I met the first lady of our state this week, Pat Strub during
a coffee hour held for her at the Jack Sumner residence. The
coffee was well attended by the Morrow County ladies and
Pat kept them all at ease with her easy-going personality.
1 watched Larry Mills, president of the Heppner Chamber
of Commerce as he asked for a show of hands of those who
' wanted the parking meters operating again. Last Saturday I
watched our local gendarmes give out parking tickets. Every
other car was being cited, so plug those parking meters.
Seen, a local city official's new car placed on blocks. It was
going nowheres fast. Heard, a gun safety expert accidenUy
shot his wife in the shoulder with a pistol. Dr. Carpenter
answering the clinic's phone, throwing the caller in a panic,
. she was sure she had the wrong number.
' Probably other parts of Heppner are enjoying visiting
grandchildren this summer, but South Court Street seems to
- be a favored place to visit. Soon Grandpa and Grandma Jim
Thomson will have five grandchildren along with five of their
own children and spouses in their home.
: Meridith and Tom Walters will come with their four sons
' from California. Bruce and Phyllis will bring their daughter
Stacey from Portland. Bernice will coi.ie to spend part of her
vacation here from her work in Portland.
