World traveler
visits hometown
By Justine W eatherford
About 40 years ago Ellis Thomson moved from Heppner to
New York City. Last week he visited here for the first time
since 1954. He is now retired from the New York Central
Railroad System. He calls himself "an old bachelor."
Ellis has many friends and relatives in Heppner and other
parts of this state. His father Charles was one of the three
original Thomson brothers who founded Heppner's oldest
always-in-one family business. His mother the former Belle

Ellis Thompson
Colliver died when he was eight years old, and when he was
10, he gained a wonderful stepmother, the former Mary
Farns worth.
He had his public schooling here and was very active in
Heppner High School dramatics. He also performed in the
Amateur Nights at the old Star Theater. His romantic
clowning there is preserved on film that Bert Sigsbee shot
and that Bert's daughter Elaine George has now permitted to
be remade so that it can be shown on modern projectors.
After high school, Ellis attended the University of Oregon
and worked here in the Thomson Brother's store. He was
known as an amateur artist then and is still working at this
hobby. He has studied art and especially enjoys painting in
oil mostly portraits.
His home for many years in New York City is on East 88th
Street "right across from Mayor Beam's residence and just
four blocks from Central Park." He enjoys many concerts
and much theater and says he "haunts museums and art
galleries there and in Europe."
Ellis Thomson is really a world traveler. This coming fall
he plans to make his 12th trip to Europe and will spend most
i of this trip in the Greek Islands which he especially enjoys.
He has visited Mexico three times, Bermuda twice and
Puerto Rico twice as well as making many, many trips
across and around the United States.
He has had some unusual adventures on his travels. He
said that some of the more difficult traveling has been in the
communist countries. " Crossing Hungary we were locked
into a windowless car for over 24 hours without any
food most unpleasant."
Ellis wants people to not worry too much about crime and
about being mugged in New York City. He regrets the recent
bad publicity. He feels that that city is much safer than many
other cities.
Before his younger brother Earl Thomson, Portland (now
also retired) brought him here last Wednesday, Ellis visited
many friends and family members in Roseburg, Corvallis
and Waldport. Other members of his family visiting here last
week were his Aunt Louise Thomson Becket and her
husband. Merle who camped at Cutsforth Park.
Ellis has been a house guest of his cousin Jim and wife
Madge Thomson. He has also enjoyed visiting with cousin
Winifred Thomson Cox and family and cousin Rod Thomson
and family.
He happily visited old friends at the Pioneer Memorial
Hospital and at the county Museum and Heppner Library. He
enjoyed visiting and lunching with Zeta Brosnan and three
more generations of Brosnans on Butter Creek and visiting
and dining with Happy and Claude Graham. He is pleased
with the way his hometown looks.
"The homes .nd yards and trees and the Masonic
Cemetery look very good," he remarked.
This spring and summer Ellis is traveling on a MHlay
Gr- hound Bus. Co. pass which he recommends highly. After
leaving Heppner last Saturday he expected to go almost
non-stop to Chicago. He left his apartment in New York City
on April 26 and expects to be back there on June 24.
