T1trtir, June 17, 9T ( r orp. ousted inzu from Hermisfon Tourney - V, I fx 1 w X v 1 KINZIE 8 HAYLOFT 7 Kinzua rallied in the fourth to hold on to the lead as they defeated top rated Hayloft, 8-7 from Kennewick in the open ing game of the 5th annual Hermiston Slo-Pitch Invita tional Tournament, last week end in Hermiston. Twenty-six teams through out Oregon, Washington and Idaho participated in the three-day affair. The Pendle ton Elks won the tournament. Kinzua started the 9:30 p.m. contest with two runs in the first by Keith Curnett and LaVern Van Marter. Hayloft fought back and scored one run. In the third inning, left fielder Jamie Sands and first baseman Marvin Lane hit singles and scored on Hayloft errors when Gerald Seals hit a baseline drive. The Kennewick team drove in one run and another run in the fourth to close the gap 4-3. Hayloft's pitcher aided a strong fifth inning for Kinzua as he walked Mike Rowell to start the inning. Jamie Sands slashed the ball for a triple that brought Rowell in. Hits by Marvin Lane and Gerald Seals gave Kinzua four runs. In the sixth, Hayloft emerg ed with four runs but fell short of one run to overcome Kinzua's lead. KINZUA 8 WALLA WALL MERCHANTS 13 Kinzua put runners on base five out of seven innings but fell short of their bid to advance in the winners brack et as they lost 13-8 to the Walla Walla Merchants in the second game of the three day tournament in Hermiston. After winning two games Walla Walla drove in four runs in the top of the first to get the game rolling. Kinzua jumped back with runs by Keith Curnett, Mike Rowell and Jamie Sands and left three men on base. In the second inning, the Washington team grabbed two runs. They added four more runs in the fourth and two in the seventh' to clinch the victory and advance them to the next game in the winner's circle. Kinzua scored one run in the second on Bill Baker's double. Walla Walla's pitcher walked Baker and Curnett to start off the fourth. Lavern Van Mar ter, Marvin Lane and Gerald Seals hit singles and brought Baker and Curnett across the plate. Heppner's only two remain ing runs were scored by Curnett and Seals in the sixth. KINZUA 11 HERMISTON HERALD 8 Keith Curnett's lead off homer in the bottom of the first ignited a five-run rally and paced Kinzua past Her miston Herald 11-8 in the 2:15 p.m. game. Curnett's run was followed by runs from Lavern Van Marter, Mike Rowell, Marvin Lane and Kevin Dick. Gary Kemp and Tim Bellamy were left on base. The Hermiston Herald jumped back for four runs on errors by Kinzua. The second inning saw Hermiston Herald with three runs and Kinzua with four. Kinzua's runs were scored on hits from Lavern Van Marter, Mike Rowell, Jamie Sands and Gerald Seals. Curnett game up with one run in the third while the Herald managed only one run in the fifth. The last run to be scored was by Kinzua's Jamie Sands in the bottom of the sixth. KINZUA ft DODGE BOYS 14 Kinzua took an early lead with five runs in the fourth but couldn't hold on to it as they lost to The Dodge Boys, a Grandview team 14-8 and were eliminated from the Hermiston Slo-Pitch Tourna ment Ixft fielder, Jamie Sands started the game by smashing a home run in the top of the second. He was followed across the home plate by Kevin Dick who hit a single. The Dodge Boys came up with two runs in the bottom of the second and one in the third to take a 3-2 lead. Kinzua's batters went to work in the fourth as they scored five runs on singles from Sands, Gerald Seals. Kevin Dick. Dave Eckman and a double from pitcher Gary Kemp. The following were awarded prizes as winners of the spring playdays: Six and under: Jason Dou gherty, first; Dwayne Ball, second; Angie Ashbeck, third; Mike Van Schoiack, fourth. 7 9 year olds: Steve Currin, first; Bridgett Greenup, sec ond: Trisha Mahoney. third; S-o-r Douuhertv and .Steve Miller, fourth. 10-12 year olds: Giff Dough erty, first; Brett Sherer, second; Anita Palmer, third; Anne Van Schoiack, fourth. 13-17 year olds: Jana Stea gall, first; Cindy Dougherty, second; Todd Sherer, third; Donna Palmer and Scott Sherer, fourth. 18 and over: Dick Sherer, first; Judy Currin, second; Sherrie Kemp, third; Patricia Van Schoiack and Kathy ; Gilbert, fourth. i; V Hun. i The last "at home" visitation of the season was held last Sunday when the local golfers hosted the McNary men and women. Nice weather prevailed for the match and some good scores were recorded by the local participants. Two men in the upper age bracket tied for low gross with 68s. They were Judge Carmicheal and Frances Doherty. There was also a tie for second low gross between Doug Gunderson and Dave Harrison. These fellows were just one stroke behind the leaders. Jim Wishart had low net all to himself with a 51. Craig Cooley used his power to win long drive honors and Jim Wishart collected another prize for KP on No. 3. Allen Phillips had the KP on No. 9. Cindy Kerr was the only woman from Heppner participating so if there were any awards she apparantly won them. In the three placings for low gross for the McNary men, Ray Matz and Jim Murray tied fnr ton honors with a 71. Don Zornes was a close second with 72 and Jack Waltmire was third at 74. In the low net division Jack ft McKern at 52 and Fred Cotant was third with 54. Tom Waas apparently addressed the ball properly to win the long drive award and Waas took KP honors on No. 3 with Art Marr doing the same on No. 9. Competition was tough between the McNary women as three tied for low gross honors with 40. They were: Margaret Towers, Jean Miller and Pearl Waas. Arlctte Loughary walked off with top honors in the low net division with a 24. Second place was won by Pansy Murray with 27 and Winona Taggart and Rene McKern tied for third at 30. Jean Miller won KP award on No. 8 and Arlette Loughery did the same for No. 4 KP. Ron Jones, Rick Johnston and John Edmundson were in charge of arrangements and dinner was served by the ladies. In other golfing events, the Men's medal play will be held on Sunday, June 20. Either last Sunday's score will qualify you for one of the three flights or qualifying rounds must be played on Saturday, June 19. Second half of the Wednesday night team play will begin on Wednesday, June 23. Sunday, June 27 will be the first away visitation.
