The first weeks in May are
usually field trip season for
: students of Morrow County
schools. During this time the
students visit the museum and
the library, in Heppner, and if
time permits, they will also
; visit the county courthouse.
t Last Thursday, 55 students
from A.C. Houghton Elemen
"iary School, Irrigon, were
visitors in Heppner. Following
! a tour of the library and
1 museum they enjoyed a lunch
in the city park then went to
the courthouse. The students
were of the second, third and
fourth grades and were
accompanied by John Dawson
and Mrs. Partlow.
The previous week 60 stu
dents from Umatilla Elemen
tary School visited Heppner
taking in the same interesting
sights.

locally when Soroptimist In
ternational Heppner Club,
sponsors Open House at Pio
neer Memorial Hospital and
the new Heppner Medical
Clinic Saturday.
Hours will be 1-4 p.m. at
both locations. Club members
will be on hand to serve
refreshments. Conducted
tours of the facilities will be
held.

Heppner namesake Henry
Heppner, who opened the first
merchandise store in the town
in 1872, is featured in a multi
media presentation of the 150
year history of Jews in
Oregon, a Bicentennial salute
at the Jewish Community
Center, Portland, during May.
Also spotlighted is one of
Heppner's first mayors, H.
Blackman.
There is no charge for a
retrospective of thousands of
photos which take up the
entire Jewish Community
Center, 665J S.W. Capitol
Highway. The retrospective is
especially recommended for
students 10 years and older,
and for those interested in
ethnic studies. Trained tour
guides are available for spe
cial groups.
A slide-tape show, "Memory
is Survival," will be shown to
the public each Saturday and
Sunday evening from May 9.
There is an admission charge
of $3.50. The show, under the
auspices of the Jewish Oral
History and Archive Project,
Shirley Tanzer, director, is a
culmination of over 3 years of
interviews with members of
Portland's Jewish community
to gather in-depth material on
early Jewish life. It is co
sponsored by the JCC and by
Portland Section. National
Council of Jewish Women.
