4-H Community Pride was
in action in Irrigon Saturday,
May 8, when a bicentennial
flower garden was planted in
the design of a colonial Old
Glory 13 star flag. The garden
is 28 feet long by 15 feet deep
and required 414 plants. The
flowers are red, white and
blue petunias with a border of
marigolds. Lawn grass will be
seeded in the surrounding
area.

It is located on North Main
across from the fire station.
Old-timers tell us this is not
the first time flowers were
planted here but at one time a
flower garden welcomed tra
velers who arrived by train in
the early 1900s. The railroad
depot was located just west of
the 6th St. and the park was
between 6th and 8th streets.

Irrigon and has located her
new double-wide trailer home
near the home of her daughter
and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
John Brandt and family.
4-H division. Pendleton's FFA
team took firsts in beef and
sheep judging and second in
swine and horses. LaGrande 's
4-H team won the beef
judging, and took second in
sheep and third in horses.

Morrow Extension Staff
The recent Morrow County CowBelle's poster contest
attracted approximately 250 entries from elementary school
students in the county, according to Sherri Mahoney, beef
education chairman. "Creativity of the students was
apparent in all entries, and it was really difficult to pick
winners. CowBelles thank all the students who took time tq
enter the contest," reports the chairman.
Cash prizes for first and second placings in three groups
have been announced. In the first and second grade category,
Kevin Teeman, lone was winner, with Bobby Kinzer in
second place. Honorable mention in the age group was given
Eric Pointer, Trina Lynn Palmer, Susan Martin, lone, Tami
Cate and Kevin Hughes, Heppner. '
Winner in the third and fourth grade group was Craig
Hams, lone, with Steve Currin receiving second. Honorable
mention was given Carla Miles, Lavena Marlatt, Jodi
Padberg, Heppner and Rocky Rodrigues, Irrigon.
Mike Currin. Heppner fifth grader received first place in
the fifth and sixth age group, with Steve Gardner, Heppner in
second Honorable mention went to Helen Daltosa,
Boardman, Patricia Morley and Ann Lindsey, Lexington.
Winners in each age group received a $5 cash award;
second place received $2.50. All posters will be used in
CowBelles beef promotion and displayed in the CowBelles
booth at county fair.
LOCAL COWBELLES ATTEND SESSION
Officers of the local CowBelles group recently attended a
general training session for eastern Oregon groups in Prairie
City. Information was shared on beef education and beef
promotion projects, as well as p an. for m-s ore
demonstrations to be given in the metropolitan areas of

FOUR-COUNTY COUNSELOR TRAININGS
Summer means camp to 4-H member 8es M2. and camp
means qualified counselors are needed to assist with the
summer camp planned at Cutsforth Park.
oX youths from Morrow, Gilliam. Wheeler and Sherman
counties will receive orientation to camp counseling at an
oveSe retreat to be held near Fossil May 14-15, according
to Birdine Tullis, Morrow Extension Assistant.
Information and application forms were mailed to all older
4-H members in the county, with a request that they be
returned immediately. Those attending from a four
counties will have the opportunity to help plan 'he summer
camp, get acquainted with others who will be counseling, and
nave the fun of an overnite campout, in addition to general
information concerning the challenges of camp counseling
