The Home Extension Wom
en met Thursday at the Janet
Barker home with 12 mem
bers present. A salad potluck
lunch was served at noon. The
topic was "Home Decorating"
given by Mra. Sylvia Cockerel
and Mrs. Pattl Engle.
Refreshments were served
in the reception room of the
church Sunday evening after
the services for Rev. and Mrs.
Jack McLeod. The McLeods
left Monday for New York
where they plan to live. Mrs.
McLeod was presented a quilt
that was pieced and quilted by
some of the church women.
A large crowd enjoyed a skit
"Slap Stick Comedy Variety
Theater" held In the school
cafeteria Saturday night and
given by the Booster Gub.
The Hall Committee had a
crab feed at the Grange Hall
Saturday night with a large
crowd coming from the near
by areas.
The Monument Grazing
Association held their annual
meeting at the Grange Hall
Tuesday with a potluck dinner
at noon. Tom Campbell was
elected President. Bob Blake
slee vice president and Gary
Engle re-elected secretary
treasurer. Don Capon and Bob
Blakeslee replaced Gene Gil
bert and John Schubert as
directors.
The Grade School boys
basketball tournament was
held Wednesday at Long
Creek. Monument won the
sportsmanship award. The
girls volleyball tournament
was held the last of February
at Dayville where the Monu
ment girls took first place.
The Grange held their
regular meeting Tuesday with
10 members and 2 guests. The
crab feed and finances for the
two TV channels which the
community wishes to obtain
were discussed.
Dustin Lance, son of Mr,
and Mrs. Lester Gienger.
Fossil, underwent a blood
transplant when only four
daxs old in Pendleton. Mike
Ricker. The Dalles, was
recently released from the
hospital after nearly three
months stay due to a car
accident. Both are grandsons
of Mr. and Mrs. Archie
Gienger of Mt. Vernon. Mike
is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis
Ricker.
Robert Wheeler, son of Mrs.
Fred Tubbs was recently
promoted to Sargeanl of the
City Police Patrol in Portland.
He is attending his fourth term
at Portland Community Col
lege, majoring In crimiology.
The Wheelers recently moved
from Beaverton to Crystal
Hills in Portland.

Pendleton. Friday. Miss Stei
ner was born March 3, 1885 in
Mt. Vernon. OR and died
March 2. She was a teacher In
Grant County for many years.
Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Beam
er and sons left last week.
They had been custodians at
the school for nearly a year
until his resignation. Pete

The American Legion Post
No. 87 and the Auxiliary met
Monday evening, March 15 at
the Legion Hall for a potluck
dinner in honor of the Legion's
57th birthday.
All members were urged to
attend the District 6 confer
ence to be held in Pendleton
March 27. 1:30 p.m. at the
V.F.W. Hall, followed by a
potluck dinner.
At the Auxiliary meeting It
was decided to hold an Easter
bake sale. Friday. April 16. at
9 a.m. at the office of Turner.

Discussion was held on
sending delegates to Girls
State. June 13-18. at Willamet
te University. Salem. Every
year the Soroptimists and the
Legion Auxiliary each send a
delegate to Girls State. The
Legion and other civic organi
zations send delegates to Boys
State.
Three thousand poppies
have been received and cor
sages are being made.
A potluck dinner followed by
a dance will be held on Satur
day. April 10. for Legion and
Auxiliary members and
guests. Interested veterans
are welcome to attend.

Day Friday to attend the
funeral services held at the
Driskill Memorial Chapel for
Mr. David Clark. Mr. Clark,
an Ontario resident was Sue
and Bob's uncle. Mr. and Mrs.
Hire went to Prairie City for
the interment. Before return
ing home the Hires visited
with Mr. Ray Clark of Prairie
City. Mrs. Mattison spent a
short time with Frank and
Earlene Spivey. John Day.

a meeting Wednesday morn
ing at Jeffmore Hall. Those
present voted to change the
day and time of the weekly
meetings to Monday evenings
at 6:30 p.m. The meetings will
still be held at the hall. Mrs.
Betty Murdock was elected
leader and Mrs. Shirley Orr
was elected co-leader when
the members voted for club
officers. Mrs. Deena Reid is
the new secretary. Treasurer
is Mrs. Irene Samples. It is
hoped that the new day and
lime will be more convenient
for the members and also for
anyone wishing to join the
club.

went to The Dalles Saturday
on business. While there they
visited with daughter Judy
Hubbell and their other dau
ghter and family. Mr. and

stopped to visit with Deena 's

kane early last Friday mor
ning to keep a doctors
appointment for Clark. They
all went on to Bonners Ferry
ID, to visit Marti's mother,
Mrs. Nina Castles and other
relatives. Saturday morning
Vic and Richard went to
Libby. MT to pick up their
Mother. They also stopped in
Troy. MT to pick up Vic's
daughter Cheryl. After spend
ing the day in Bonners Ferry.
Cheryl returned to her home
in Troy and Vic rejoined the
family In Idaho. They had
planned to return home to
Kinzua Sunday but car trouble
forced a delay that proved to
be very welcome when Marti's
sister Loretta gave birth to a
son on Sunday morning. Marti
was able to visit the hospital
with her brother-in-law Jay
Baker to see the baby Sunday
night. This Is the first experi
ence Marti has had being an
aunt and she is sure that her
tiny nephew Joshua is just it.
The public is invited to
attend a movie entitled "A
Thief In The Night." The
movie will be shown April 22
at theKinzua Community
Church.
Frank and Earlene Spivey
were here Saturday to visit his
sister and brother-in-law Dave
and Sue Mattison and daugh
ters. They also visited with
Marlene and Rick Benson.
Mrs. Dinah Jackson and

Dalles Friday on business.

District Council of Assembly
of God Churches, at First
Assembly in Portland during
the past week.
The Rev. Donald Smith.
Umatilla was ordained to the
ministry at the District meet
ing. He attended Northwest
College in Kirkland. WA. prior
to entering the ministry and is
presently pastor of the Uma
tilla Assembly.
The Irrigon City Council
authorized City Engineer Val
Toronto to proceed with a
facility study which is the first
of 3 steps toward a city sewer
system. The homes in the city
are presently on septic tanks.

was also present at the
Council's request to inform
them as to what degree his
staff could assist. Mayor pro
tern. Vernon Stewart was
named by the council as
contact representative for the
project.
Mrs. La vern Christ ianson
and Mrs. Ed Johnson request
ed the council to allow the
Lions Club Auxiliary to take a
census of the city. Permission
was granted and Ron Hall
volunteered to find out what
steps would need to be taken to ,
assure that the census had
official status and could be
used in the annual certifica
tion by the state. Some citi
zens have commented recent
ly on Irrion's low population
figure reflected at 270 on the
highway sign entering the
city. This is incorrect accord
ing to Mayor Chester Wilson
who says the city is presently
certified at 370 people.
A number of towns people
were present at the meeting.
Council meetings are always
open to the public.

parents club at A.C. Houghton
School. Irrigon will be held
March 16. 2:30 p.m. in the
Elementary School. Parents
may bring small children as
babysitting will be provided.

will be the parents club
activity in the Bicentennial
Fair that is being sponsored
by the student body and

City Service building in the
February council meeting and
no decision made on what
other steps the council wished
to take. It was decided to let
the matter rest for the present
but that the building not be
rented but continue to be used
for city meetings.
Mayor Wilson presented
some' budget material in
support of requesting a tax
base in the May primary
election. No action was taken
to set the vote.
