heard Engineer Val Toronto
proposal for an engineering
study relating to construction
of city sewer system. The
matter waa tabled after dis
cussion. Other business included
report that Improvement Dis
trict No. 6 had been completed
and letters sent to landowners
Informing them of the amount
of the proposed assessment. A
hearing was set for Feb. 20 on
an assessment ordinance. A
hearing was also set for the
Osterkamp addition regula
tions. Don Adams was reappoint
ed to the budget committee
and Kenneth Lamb was ap
pointed to the committee.
There were no bids received
on the City's Service Building
offered for sale.
The Council authorized Re
corder Barbara Byrd to write
a letter to the State Highway
Dept. requesting a safety
crosswalk at loth St. near A C.
Houghton Elementary School.
Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Wad
kins are the parents of a son
born Feb. 12. weighing 6 lbs, 6
oz. His name is Justin Lance.
Paternal grandparents are
Mr. and Mrs. John Wadklns,
Irrigon and maternal grand
parent are Mr. and Mrs. Jim
Cunningham, Coulee City. The
baby was born at the Good
Shepherd Hospital, Hermis
ton. Recent visitors at the home
of Mr and Mrs. E.A. Stephens
were Mr. and Mrs. William
Baker. Dufur and Mr. and
Mrs. James Baker, lone, who
are friends of the family.

Leon Wilson took a trip to
Portland for a physical check
up at the Veterans Clinic. He
was an overnight guest of his
aunt, Mrs. Lois Land.
VA SPENDS
The Veterans Administra
tion spent 1196,022,501 in
Oregon during fiscal year 1975
for facilities, operations and
benefits to veterans and
dependent, Mrs. Donna M.
Arndt, director of the Portland
VA regional office, said. Of the
total VA expenditures,
$299,602 was spent in Morrow
County.
Arndt said the total expen
ditures in Oregon Included
$85,181,014 for veterans com
pensation and pension;
$54,237,461 In readjustment
and education payments; and
$10,810,913 for insurance and
Indemnites. Regional office
and hospital operating costs in
Oregon amounted to
$44,326,251. '
Multnomah County received
the largest portion
$71,358,776. Douglas was sec
ond with $15,644,905. followed
by Lane with $15,162,652.

The false spring weather
ended early in the week when
sudden temperature changes
dropped the mercury to zero.
Farmers might well welcome
a blanket of snow on crops
tempted into premature gro
wth by the recent unseasonal
weather. Ice extends the width
of the river in many places.
Spray people in Pendleton
for the Amy Bratt funeral
services last week were the
Lee Brisbois, the Gus Streck
ersk, Eddy and Evelyn Cress,
Amine Nichols, Celia Reed
and Mr. and Mrs. Odcll
Adams.
Mrs. Ron Brisbois and little
Brick returned Sunday from a
two week's visit with relatives
in Hermiston. Her sister, Kate
Dunn, is improving satisfac
torily following surgery at a
Hermiston hospital.
Larry Brisbois II, Board
man, spent the past week here
with his grandparents the Lee
Brisbois and the Don Troxells.
His parents, Kathy and Larry
came for the weekend and
Larry returned home with
them Sunday evening.
The 4-H Clover Club met at
the home of their leader, Effie
Stirewalt, on Tuesday. Pre
sent were officers Carolyn
Kendall, president Deanna
McGuire, Secretary and Mar
sha Troxell who is reporter
and responsible for telephone
contacts.
Others present were Lisa
McGuire, Deanna Conley and
Michele Hamilton.
Tuesday visitors and dinner
guests at the Robert Reed
home included Jessie and Pat
Shay, Antelope and Mrs.
Shay 's son. Steve Duncan with
his wife Julietta and daughter
Valerie of Petersburg, AK,
where Duncan is a construc
tion engineer in an extensive
housing project.

Gene Russell remains in

hit ceident when he fell from
the Kinzua train where he was
employed. He sustained a
broken wrist and a broken
arm,; severe head lacerations
and a fractured cheek bone.
Gene has suffered some com
plications and will undergo
further surgery.
