Scribble
Washington In the grip of a poor handwriter, the pen is
mightier than the sword-wreaking havoc, inviting
embarrassment, and wasting money.
But help is on the way as the fine Italian hand stages
comeback, giving its practitioners a mild creative glow and
commanding respect for their slightest note.
Poor penmanship often spells trouble, with a capital "T":
In Washington . DC. a deliveryman misread a scribbled
order for fuel oil and pumped 385 gallons through a
disconnected intake into the basement of a house whose tank
had been removed.
Zippers, not Grippers
A department store customer who sent in an order for
slippers with zippers got sleepers with grippers.
In a New England bank, a man shoved a scrawled note to a
teller, who nerviously kicked an alarm button. Police
converged on the bank and collared the man. He turned out to
be a businessman with laryngitis whose note, deciphered,
read: "May I have a new checkbook?"
Handwriting reformers say oil spills, wrong orders, false
alarms, and other wasteful mishaps can be avoided by
switching to a new version of an old script called chancery
cursive, or the italic hand.
It is an informal but stylized version of the italic type long
used by printers, the National Geographic Society says.
The italic hand developed during the Italian Renaissance
in the Apostolic Chancery, an office that issues papal bulls
and lesser documents. Pope Eugenius IV ordered that an

easily formed small script be reserved for minor papers that
needed to be quickly written. The script became known as
chancery cursive.
It was perfected by an assistant in the chancery, Ludovico
degli Arrighi Vincentino, known as Arrighi. In 1522 he
published a manual of the chancery italic alphabet. The first
of all copybooks, many calligraphers consider it the finest
ever created.
Italic writing makes a handsome page. An English
enthusiast, describing a particularly fine sample, wrote:
"The italics march across the vellum as regularly, smoothly
and stately as the High land Brigade on parade."
On a more practical level, a Colorado calligrapher notes:
if you want to write a letter that gets attention, write it in
mam across
italic. If you write for hotel reservations in italic, you'll be no
stranger when you arrive."
Advocates say it is impossible to scribble in italic, yet in
speed tests the italic writers have written faster and more
legibly than others.
"People are tired of ballpoint pens and the ordinary
handwriting they get from them." says a Washington. D C.
pen dealer. Italic writing satisfies the urge for creativity. It
can be mastered, some say, with 15 minutes a day of practice
for two months.
Oregon thinks so highly of italic writing that it has made it
an official handwriting style in public schools and named a
calligrapher laureate for the state.

Lvle H. Dahlin, District
Director of the Immigration
and Naturalization Service
reminded aliens in Oregon
that Saturday is the deadline
for filing address report forms
as required under provisions
of the 1952 Immigration and
Nationality Act.
The Immigration Official
urged aliens who have not yet
filed their address reports to
do so no later than Jan. 31 to
avoid possible penalties.
Mr. Dahlin said the law
requires every alien except
those having diplomatic status
and representatives of certain
international organiza
tions must file the address
report during January of each
year at the nearest Post Office
or Immigration and Naturali
zation Service Office.
Mr. Dahlin said an estimat
ed 15.000 aliens in the State of
Oregon have filed address
reports so far this January.
A total of approximately
26.000 aliens filed address
reports in Oregon last year.
An increase in this figure is
expected for 1976.
