rodeo finals'
There were more than 10,000
spectators in the grandstands
and 1067 contestants from 28
states and 2 Canadian Pro
vinces on Sunday, Aug. 10 at
the finals of the National High
School Rodeo at Gallup, NM.
The finalists, who had rated
high in their events during the
week, were the top 15 per
formers in each event. Ione's
Dawn Peterson scored 12th in
the Girls' Barrels. There was
a small fraction of a second
difference in the times these
top girls made.
Oregon was well represent
ed in the final performances
by these state winners: Denise
Hill, 15th in Breakaway Rop
ing; Ron Parrish. 9th in
Saddle Bronc; Terry Rivera,
7th in Bareback; Terry Riv
era. 4th in Bull Riding; Tom
and Dave Inmen, 3rd in Team
Roping, and Arlen Driggers,
2nd in Steer Wrestling.

presented Oregon High School
Rodeo Queen Rita Ericksen of
Condon and National High
School Rodeo Queen Julie
Rugg of Athena with bouquets
of red carnations arranged
with wheat, barley and Ore
gon grapes. Jeff Palmer,
Terrebonne, thanked Julie for
the outstanding job she had
done in representing National
High School Rodeo for the
nation and for the State of
Oregon.
Dawn Peterson returned to
lone on Aug. 12 from her
exciting experience. She said
it vi as very thrilling to have
the announcer read telegrams
from Oregon friends during
the week. She would also like
to thank many friends and
relatives who sent her cards
and gifts of good luck which
made her experience extra
meaningful.

School board hire
two new teacher
Morrow County School
Board at its regular meeting,
hired Diane Black from
Boardman as language arts
teacher at lone High School.
Miss Black will replace Mrs.
Unda Williamson who has
resigned.
The board also hired Jerry
Deford of Cornelius to fill the
vacancy of Math and P E.
teacher at Heppner Junior
High created by the recent
resignation of Ed Sherman.
In other business, the board
hired Nina Hulse as assistant
cook and Atha l-ewellen as
cooks helper. Both positions
are at Riverside.
Action was taken to approve
the inclusion of all employees
of the district in a program to
apply unused sick leave to
retirement benefits.
Mr. Doherty reported that
the city council had not been
able to accept the district's
application for a building
permit to place a mobile home
at Heppner High School and
that the council had asked the
matter be persued through the
planning commission.
The board then voted to file
for a variance with the City of
Heppner Planning Commis
sion. An offer by Adon llamlett of
lone to operate the Heppner
Lexington bus as a contract
bus run w as approved for 45
cents per mile.
