Grant County l7a!t-A-Tl.on nets
$9,000 for ambulance
A Walk-A-Thon was conduc
ted Saturday. May 31, over the
21 miles between Long Creek
and Monument. With other
fund-raising events, over
$9,000 was raised for the North
Grant County Ambulance
Fund.
According to a spokesman
for the group, volunteer walk
ers totaled 3,141 1 j miles which
amounted to $3,141.25 for the
fund.
A community ham dinner,
which was served free to the
marchers, raised $325. A
benefit dance at Hardman
that night, sponsored by the
Old Time Fiddlers Associa
tion, earned another $340
toward Ihe fund.
Other donations toward the
fund raised the total for the
day to nearly $4000.
174 marchers made the walk
and 109 completed the 21
miles. Nine of the marchers
went 20 miles, nine walked 19
miles, and eight walked 18
miles.
Donald Girdner, 7, son of
Mr. and Mrs. George Girdner
of Long Creek, was thought to
be the youngest person to
finish the 21 mile course. Chad
Engle. 6. son of Mr. and Mrs.
Gary Engles. Monument,
went 19 miles, and Chris
Meadows. 5. of Eugene, cov
ered 14 miles. Ricky Tubbs. 8.
from Monument, was another
young marcher who covered
quite a bit of the route.
Observers noted that the
youngsters in the procession
did a lot of wandering from
one side of the road to the
other and probably covered
more miles than their total
indicates.
Warren Wolfgram. 13. son of
Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Wolf
gram. Long Creek, was the
first to finish the walk. His
time was 3 55. Second was
Terry Johns. 17. from Long
Creek, and Bob Cockrell. 32. of
Monument was third. Peggy
Murphy, 15. Monument, was
fourth and (he first girl to
finish.

Jean Cunningham. 69. and
Mildred McGirr 59. both of
Fox. finished the walk in 10
hours, leaving Long Creek at
6:10 a.m. and arriving at
Monument about 4 p.m. They
were thought to be Ihe oldest
ladies entering and finishing
the Walk-A-Thon.
The hot sun troubled some of
the walkers. Grant County
Assessor James K. Allen
walked 18 miles, but finally
had to bow out because of the
heat. His wife. Mildred, fin
ished the march, and was
judged the best dressed par
. ticipant in her sunbonnet and
long while gloves.
The idea of the Walk-A-Thon
was conceived by Mr. and
Mrs. Mervin Derrick of Long
Creek. Derrick, who is recup
erating from surgery, had
been told by his doctor to walk
daily.
After the Walk-A-Thon and
the ham dinner, a beef raffle
was held in Monument. Cecil
Swaggart of Ritter and Carol
Kautz of Dale were the lucky
winners of a half beef each.
Arlene Segraves. Dale, was
the lucky ticket holder to win a
quilt. The quilt top was
donated by Eva Calhoun. Long
Creek, and the quilt was sewn
by Louise Hunt. Mildred
McGirr. and Mattie Osborne.
