John Jepson was elected commander; Roy Taylor, vice commander; Charles Doher ty, adjutant; Donald Peter son, service officer; Jerry McElligott, chaplain; Bill Ling, sergeant-at-arms, and Harold Rietmann, historian. Elected to serve on the Executive Committee were Bob Rietmann, Eldon Tucker, Gene Rietmann and Herman Blettel. Bob Rietmann, chairman, reported on the fireworks to be held July 3. Don McElligott was appointed chairman of the Memorial Day Service to be held May 26, 10 a.m. at the school grounds. It was report ed that they have had a poor turnout for this service. Mark this day on your calendars and join the Legionnaires, in honoring the service men that gave their lives for our country. District 6 Commander, Ira Reves from Pilot Rock was a guest at the meeting and presented Commander John Jepson with the Annual Amer icanism Citation for outstand ing service. He also informed the members of events coming up in the future and also at the convention. Delegates elected to attend the State Convention at Kla math Falls were John Jepson, Charlie Doherty and Eva Hamlett. Alternates were Gene Lancaster and Clifford Aldrich. The lone High School chorus and band left early Wednes day morning for a field trip to Portland. They stopped at Cascade Locks and the band, chorus and swing chorus put on an hour concert for the members of the Cascade Locks school. After lunch they went to Portland where they were guests of Warner Pacific College. During the afternoon students attended the choral class. In the evening they attended a movie and then to the Organ Grinder for pizza. The next morning they attended the band class. They arrived back in lone about 5 p.m. Thursday after noon. They were accompanied by Miss Shirline Burton, band and music teacher. Mr. and Mrs. Adon Hamlett and Mr. Leonard Munkers. about sponsoring a children's story hour once a week at the library this summer. The money-making com mittee displayed the three items to be raffled off this month to raise money to support the library. A 7-piece Corning set; a Hamilton Beach 14 speed blender and a West Bend electric chafing dish and skillet. Officers elected for the coming year were: Mrs. Vic Rietmann, president; Mrs. Dave Baker, vice-president; Mrs. Don Peterson, secretary-treasurer and Mrs. Van Hubbard, librarian. A beautiful spring day made the lone Garden Club plant sale a pleasant and successful activity when held on April 30 at the Legion Hall. Over one hundred persons signed the guest book during the six hours of the sale. Members of the club thank all those who cooperated in preparation, attended and purchased plants. The next meeting of the club will be held at the home of Mrs. Norman Nelson on the Baseline Road, May 14. Topic for the day will be the selection, care and propaga tion of lilacs. Mrs. Nelson invites any person interested in gardening to attend the meeting beginning at 1:30 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Nelson flew to Minneapolis, Mn. to attend the thirty-third reunion of the First Battalion of the Navy Seabees Con struction Battalion. Besides enjoying visiting with many friends, they also went to see Jean's cousin who is on the staff of Macalaster College in St. Paul. Mrs. Charlotte Millman re turned home Sunday from Portland after having spent a week in the Good Samaritan Hospital following surgery. Mrs. Roy Slender, Mrs. Max Muller. and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hoffman of Salem spent the weekend at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Halvorsen. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Linn of Vernonia spent the weekend visiting Mrs. Fannie Griffith. Richard Rea of Portland was a weekendtvisitor at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. dell Rea. He also visited his daughters Donna and Darcia Rea. Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Vierson of Hat Rock, attended the Eastern Star Reception in lone Saturday evening. They were accompanied by guests from Canada. Mrs. Lewis Halvorsen drove to Portland Tuesday to visit her sister, Mrs. Dimple Mun kers. The members of the varsity basketball team and their fathers were honored with dinner Monday evening in the Cafetorium, given by the mother's of the boys. Besides the players, others attending were coaches Del La Rue, and Gordon Meyers; manager, Jim Kinzer; and Principal John Edmondson. After the dinner several short movies were shown. The Spring Music Concert will be held in the high school gym Thursday, May 8, 7:30 p.m. On Monday, May 12, the sixth grade will have an all day education field trip to Cutsforth Park. The sixth grade will be going to Camp Hancock, and the career education group of the high school will leave on a 3-day trip to Portland and Salem. Visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Pettyjohn over the weekend were their dau ghter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Sharp, Monmouth. Kristin Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Miller, Cecil, was flower girl for Holly West at the May Day festival and parade in Arlington. Mrs. Lee Pettyjohn, Mrs. George Miller and Justin attended the festival. Also attending were an aunt and cousin. Mrs. Bill McCoin and Trevor, of Olex. The senior fellowship din ners each Wednesday at 5 p.m. are being well attended. Any person 55 years or older is welcome. The dinner is held in the social rooms of the United Church of Christ and is sponsored by the community. Organizations serving are Willows Grange. Rainbow Girls, Assembly No. 89, Beta Omega Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, Lutheran, Cath olic and United Church of Christ. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Crabtree drove to Portland Friday to visit Mr. and Mrs. EE. Meyers. On Saturday after noon they drove to Lincoln City where they helped L.C. Meyers celebrate his 79th birthday. They returned home on Sunday. While in Portland they visited Mr. Crabtree 's sister, Dimple Munkers at the Providence Hospital. They also visited Mrs. Elaine Good win at the University of Oregon Medical School Hospi tal. Interim pastor at lone church The Rev. Henry E. Robinson of North Carolina is serving as interim pastor of the lone United Church of Christ until a new pastor is secured. At 9:45 a.m. Sunday Bill Nix will present the camping program for the summer months at Camp Adams, sponsored by Central Pacific Conference. L'CC. Persons of all ages are welcome as adult programs are included as well as students grades 4 through 12 At 11 am the well known Covenant Players will partici pate in the regular morning services by introducing dra matic portions into the order of worship. JohnEkstrom back in school John Ekstrom. lone, who was injured in an automobile accident Jan. 5. returned to school April 29. Ekstrom. a junior at lone High School, was injured near Heppner and taken to Pioneer Memorial Hospi'al. He was later transferred to Good Samaritan Hospital. Portland, where he was hospitalized for 55 days, in a coma most of the time. John is spending most of his spare time exercising, bike riding and engaging in school activities. Sharpe and Preszlers con struction crew put in the foundation and concrete base for Irrigon 's new 200.000 gallon water reservoir last week. Northrup Steel and Tank Co. of Hermiston has begun build ing the tank on the site. Water pressure will be low on several days due to changeovers of the electrical control panel and pumping equipment. Water will be provided on an emergency standby. Mayor Chester Wilson put out an information bulletin to the community asking that no yard sprinkling be done dur ing this week or until the pumps are back in operation. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Byrd traveled to Boise, Idaho, in Mid April to be with Mrs. Byrd's father, AI Mattes, who was having open heart sur gery. He is now out of intensive care and is able to eat. While he still has a lot of discomfort due to the surgery, doctors are pleased with his recovery. He had been told there was no hope for his recovery without surgery. Mr. and Mrs. AI Mattes live in Baker. Church sale offers variety The United Methodist Women sav thev will not handle any used clothing at the May 17 lawn sale. Thev will sell several stvles of new caps and hats and new aprons that have been created especially for that sale. They are hoping for sun shine, but promise if the rains come the sale will be moved into the church building near the luncheon and baked sale. The sale will begin at 9:30 a in At the Topic Club meeting held on April 23. at the home of Mrs. Milton Morgan. Mrs. John Proudfoot gave an inter esting report on the novel. 'The Money Changers" by Arthur Hailey. It is a reveal ing account in fiction of the people in banking.
