liramltnoiher, Sally Buck, and Joe's great and true friend,
the' lonely, petty, street criminal, liatso Kicco, are
memorable characters.
The film and TV versions of this novel cut out Sally Buck,
along with many of the raw sexual episodes pictured in the

Mrs Weaihei ford feels that although parts of the novel are
repulsive lo many readers, this story is worth reading
because il is an unusual study of a lonely undereducated,

Joe's problems are fairly understandable when one
considers his environmental and sociological background.

Help for
cattle
industry
Hon Baker. Hermiston, 1972
Commercial Cattle Feeder of
the Year, is launching his own
program of self-help to the
economic-stricken cattle in
dustry. For more than six years his
company. C & B Livestock.
Inc., has been involved in one
of the most extensive beef
Improvement programs any
where in the nation.
This week Baker announced
their first Beef Performance
Profits Field Day to be held on
June 21 at the new Beef
Improvement Center located
three miles south of Hermis
ton. Baker cited the need for
close cooeralion between
cattle producers and feeders
in order lo produce both
feeder cattle and fed cattle
that meet both the L'SDA
grade and culabilily specifi
cations of today's beef mar
ket. Tim Tipiiett. manager of the
beef improvement division,
points mil that the greatest
opirtunilv lo improve effi
ciency and pave the road back
to profits is to exploit the
genetic material now avail
able from improved sires of
' both domestic and European
breeds. The breeding results
on eight major beef breeds
using inn different sires over
six y ears w ill be a highlight of
the field day program.
"We are now feeding some
newer combinations in cross
bred sleet s which are improv
ing our feeding efficiency and
can-ass culabilily," com
ments Jay Wheelhotise, feed
yard manager lie observes
that utilization of these results
can put mote dollars in both
the producer's and feeder's
pockets.
Conclusions drawn by lead
ing cattle producers, meat
packers, and bankers will
climax the day 's program.
