at Pendleton
He finished first in his class,
for boys 8 9 years of age, and
was invited to compete in the
slate finals at Corvallis.
There were 13 finalists in the
stale competition, and al
though Rodney did not place
among the top contenders, he
hit 13 25 from the specified
line.

Sherman Huskies
humble Mustangs
The Sherman County Hu
j ikies defeated the Heppner
Mustangs, 82-53, Friday night
at the Huskies' gymnasium, .
The Huskies were able to hit
from the court and managed
to get the rebounds, while they
held the Mustangs to only 9
points in the final period of
play with their tight defense.
In the first quarter the
Huskies and the Mustangs
played even ball. The period
ended tied at 14 all.
In the second quarter the
Huskies hit from all angles
and scored 27 points while
holding the Mustangs to 16. At
the half the Huskies had a
comfortable 41-30 lead.
In the third period the
Huskies maintained their fast
pace and scored another 24
points to the Mustangs' 14. At
the end of the period the
Huskies had increased their
lead over the Mustangs to 21
points.
The fourth quarter was no .
different. The Huskies scored
17 points while holding the
Mustangs to only 9. with the
final score reading Huskies 82,
Mustangs 53.

The lone Cardinals rallied in
the second half to defeat the
Helix Grizzlies, 58-51, Friday
night at the Cardinal gym
nasium. The Cards were trailing
18 10 at the end of the first
quarter and 33 26 at the end of
the half, but they came back in
the third period and took the

The win for the Huskies and
the loss of Weston-McEwen to
the Condon Blue Devils Friday
night gives the Huskies un
disputed first place in the
Columbia Basin League, with
the Mustangs in third place.
Because of inclement wea
ther the game between the
Wasco liedsides and the
Heppner Mustangs was post
poned Saturday night.
This Friday night the Mus
tangs travel to Stanfield to
meet the Tigers, and Saturday
night they travel to Athena to
meet the Tiger Scots of Weston-McEwen.
Game time is 8

Grizzlies hit on 16-61 for .262.
The Cards made 18-24 from the
free throw line for .333 while
Helix hit on 19-35 for .543. The
Cards out rebounded the Griz
zlies 32 30 and lone had 23
turnovers to the Grizzlies' 26.
Rounding out the statistics the
Cards committed 26 fouls to
Helix's 25.

Cards come from behind
to beat the Cougars
With 3 seconds left in the
game and trailing by 1 point,
tone's Paul Peterson threw
the ball at the basket from
midcourt mark. The ball
sailed through the hoop to give
the Cardinals a 53-52 victory
over the Echo Cougars Satur
day night at the Cardinal
gymnasium.
The last 30 seconds of play
were filled with expectations
for both teams as the score
see-sawed back and forth.
With 35 seconds left lone
scored to go ahead by 1 point
only to have the Cougars come
back and retake the lead.
Then with only 22 seconds left
in the game Kim Gutierrez
took a shot at the basket and
missed. But. he managed to
get his own rebound. He
passed to Mike Warren who
missed the ball and Paul
Peterson grabbed it near
midcourt and made his des
peration toss, giving the
Cardinals a victory and the
coaches near coronary.
"It was a close game all the
way." said lone Coach Del
LaRue." And the rebounding
by the Cards in the second half

bounds 38-34. as the Cards
played the boards for 23
rebounds in the second half.
At the end of the first
quarter the game was tied at
14 all. As the half ended the
Cougars led by 2 points. 30-28.
At the end of the third period
the Cougars led the Cards
44-41. In the final period Cards
scored 12 points to the Cougars
8 and won the game.
