During the past 15 years
approximately 4 million feet
of diversion ditches have been
constructed in Morrow County
in cooperation with the Mor
row Soil and Water Conserva
tion District.
The majority of these have
been built during the last five
years with financial incentive
supplied through the cost
sharing program.
Many operators are not
aware that there is an ASCS
requirement that all practices
constructed with cost -sharing
money must be maintained for
five years. This includes the
prevention of rodent damage,
sedimentation and livestock
overgrazing.
Diversions should be main
tained at their two-foot mini
mum height to prevent them
from over topping. The pre
vention of severe erosion
below these ditches is essen
tial in preserving our soil from
further loss.
