The Heppner Mustangs de
feated the Umatilla Vikings,
61-59, Saturday night on the
Vikings home court.
Leading by 1 point in the last
seven seconds of the game,
60-59. Mustang Clayton Wilson
went to the free throw line. He
made the first shot and missed
the second attempt, giving the
Mustangs a 2 point lead, 61-59.
The Vikings got the ball
started for the Heppner goal
when Mustang Wade Padberg
tipped the ball and later
passed to John Kilkenny for
another 2 points and a victory
for the Mustangs.
In the first quarter the
Vikings led the Mustangs 15-11
and the Mustangs had to play
catch-up ball to get back into
the gamj As the half ended
the Mustangs had a 34-31 lead.
The Vikings turned the tide in
the third quarter and as the
period ended the game was
tied at 45 all.
"In the fourth quarter the
Vikings, who upset Sherman
Cpunty earlier this season,
appeared to have another
victory in their grasp, until the
Mustangs came alive and took
a J point lead as the game was
coming to a close. Then came
the hectic last 7 seconds of

The Heppner Mustangs de
feated the Riverside Pirates
Friday night. 68-56. at the
Heppner High School Gym
nasium. The Mustangs were never in
any serious trouble during the
game, but the Pirates were
consistent in their threat
throughout the game.
The Pirates took a quick
lead and led the Mustangs.
22-20. at the end of the first
pejiod.
A few turnovers early in the
second period and the Mus
tangs went ahead of the
Pirates, a lead they would
nejer relinquish during the
remainder of ;he game. As the
half ended the Mustangs had a
36-32 lead.
As the third period came to
a close the Mustangs had
increased their 4-point lead to
to. and as the game ended the
Mustangs had taken the ball
game by a 12-point margin.

The Mustangs varied their
tactics in Friday nights
game, and rather than use
their familiar man-to-man
press they changed their
defensive and concentrated
efforts on Riverside's Jerry
Zielinski. allowing him to
shoot from outside the key.
which he did with accuracy,
scoring 31 points for the
Pirates.

season his teammate. Dave
McLachlan. was high point
man with 20 points. He was
followed by Ken Eckman and

scored 10 points: Dave Mc
Leod and John Kilkenny
scored 7 points each, Jerry

and Clay West 2.

The Mustangs hit 21-45 from

Vikings scored on 25-71 for
.352. Heppner hit on 21-36 from

while the Vikings hit on 9-20
for .450. The .Mustangs out
rehounded the Vikings 51-39
and Heppner had 21 turnovers
to 10 for Umatilla. The fouls
were close to even with
Umatilla taking the edge
points for the Pirates. Robert

The Mustangs hit on 30-90
from the field for 333 per cent
and hit on 8 24 from the foul
line for 333 per cent. The
Pirates hit on 19-65 from the

Friday night the Mustangs
travel to Sherman where they
will be hosted by the Huskies.
Saturday night the Mustangs

Cougars
The Echo Cougars won their
first game in the Big Sky Con
ference Friday night as they
defeated the lone Cardinals on
their home court. 46-42.
The Cougars controlled the
boards in the first quarter and
took a 17 lead over the
Cardinals as the first quarter
ended.
In the second quarter the
scoring was even as the
Cougars scored 8 points to
lone s 9. As the half ended the
Cougars had a 25-17 lead over
the Cards.
In the third quarter the
Cards increased the tempo of
the game as they scored 16
points while holding the Cou
gars to 12. lone managed to
outseore the Cougars in the
final period of play: 11-9, but
they could not overcome the
II -point deficit of the first
quarter.
The Cougars hit on 16-62
from the field for .258 while
the Cards hit on 15-62 for .242.
The Cards hit 12-27 from the
free throw line for .444 while
the Cougars hit 14-28 for .500.
The Cougars out rebounded
the Cards 51-37 and the
Cougars had 2" turnovers to 37
for the Cards.

Trailing 53-55 and with only
35 seconds left in the Rame,
the lone Cardinals managed to
defeat the I'mapine Chiefs.
57-55 on the Chiefs' home court
Saturday night.
Kim Gutierrez stole the ball
and raced down the court to t ie
the game for the Cardinals.
When the Chiefs inlxnmded the
ball. Paul Peterson. lone,
stole the ball and passed it to
Gutierrez. Gutierrez, Instead
of going for the layin, passed
the ball back to Peterson w ho
went in and scored another 2
points for the Cards.
With 9 seconds left In the
game the Chiefs Inbounded the
ball to Mike Maurer. and as he
attempted to tie the score he
fouled an lone player with no
time remaining on the clock.
Had Maurer made the basket
the 2 points would have been
nulificd because of the foul.
The Chiefs had jumped out
in front in the first quarter and
led the Cards 1711 as the
quarter ended The Cards
came back in the second
period and trailed by 1 point.

In the third quarter the
Chiefs increased their slim
lead to 4 points. 43-39. as the
period ended, in the fourth
quarter the Cards came back
to win the game in a thrilling
finnish.
