Jury acquits
man charged
with assault
Charles Stroudt was found
not guilty of assault in the
third degree Friday at a
circuit court session here.
A jury of three men and
three women reversed a
decision of Justice of the
Peace Charles O'Connor
earlier this year in which he
had found Stroudt guilty of
assault by striking Lloyd
LaGrone in the head with a
steel bit, April 3.
In justice court, Stroudt
was fined $250 and placed on
probation. Stroudt appealed
the case.
The jury listened to testi
mony for three hours, then
took 15 minutes to return its
verdict. Both Stroudt and
LaGrone were employed by a
sub-contractor at the Kinzua
mill at the time of the
altercation.
Patients admitted to Pio
neer Memorial Hospital this
week are Edith Case and
Delbert Harnden, Heppner.
Dismissed were Sandra
Palmer, Karl Palmer, Larry
Palmer, Virginia Stillman and
William Kummerland,
Heppner.
Mr. and Mr. Lee Scott,
Heppner are the parents of a
daughter, Staci Rae, born
June 22 at Pioneer Memorial
Hospital. She joins two sisters
at home. Grandparents are
Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Scott,
Walla Walla, Wn., and Mr. and
Mrs. Donald McVicker, Pas
ce, Wn. Great-grandparents
are Mr. and Mrs. T. H.
Woodard and Mrs. Virgie
Scott, Walla Walla.

You may not realize it but
Directory Assistance is a part
of everyone's phone bill. You pay
for it. And the cost of providing
this service will rise in the future.
The reason is simple enough.
The volume of calls to Directory
Assistance has been expanding at
an alarming rate, costing several
thousand extra dollars every day.
And most calls are unnecessary
because most are for numbers
already listed in the phone book.
Whenever possible, check
your phone book first. Then,
if you still can't find a number or
if it's a new listing, feel free to
call. That is why the service is
provided in the first place.
You can help hold telephone
costs down by eliminating your
unnecessary calls to Directory
Assistance.
That would eliminate some
thing else, too: the need for this
message.
