Water problems
plague Irrigon
Irrigon residents on city
water experienced a second
dry spell within a two-week
period when the well pump
failed a second time after
being repaired.
Workmen were on the job
quickly but delay in receiving
new parts extended the water
shortage for several days.
Two small pumps were
brought into service, pumping
directly into the line. When the
pump motor went out a third
time Friday a third small well
was added to keep up with the
demand.
Mayor Chester Wilson
commended residents for
their cooperation in water
conservation during the
emergency.
The Irrigon Assembly of
God plans an old-fashioned
Sunday for June 30. A potluck

gregation to wear old-fashion

They each caught their limit
of three salmon. The three
have made this an annual
event for the past several
years, and have had good luck
off the coast of Illwaco, Wash.

Pioneer
reunion
Three pioneer families, the
Cuppers, Capons and Pages,
will hold a family reunion at
Christmas Valley, July 12-14.
According to Ray W.
McDuffee of Seal Rock, these
three families are well repre
sented in Morrow County:
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Wright,
Heppner; Harold and Kenneth
Wright, Ruggs; Beth Wright
Clark, Barton Clark, Bart,
Ned and Cathy Clark, Nonda
and Hal Sunday, Janet and
Roy A. Lindstrom of lone;
Mrs. Herbert (Beth) Hynds,
Pendleton, former teacher at
lone who lived on the big
Hynds Bros. Ranch near
Cecil; and Evonne Severin
son, Beth's niece.
The Cupper-Capon-Page im
migration began soon after
'the Louisiana Purchase in
1803. Charlesa Capon, born in
Framlingham, Suffolk, Eng
land, arrived in America in
1815; Henry Cupper and Mark
Clark (Cupper) in 1817;
Harriet Cockerell (Capon)
was born in 1820; Miles Page
and Margaret Cole (Page) in
1823.
Ray and Nell McDuffee
have written a book of early
life in this section of Oregon
titled "Across Wide Seas and
Lands to a New Life on the
North Forth of the John Day
River." It is replete with
stories about the Heppner
area, such as:
"A Sperry flour mill was
built in Heppner ($4 for a
100-pound sack and one bushel
of wheat exchanged for 35
pounds of flour). A state-built
bridge at Monument allowed
sheepmen to get their wool to
market and all to get their
stock across the river to
pastures and to market; the
circus came to Heppner, for in
1889 the railroad reached
there. The Palace Hotel Co.
was incorporated and a
'magnificent three-story
building' was built to accom
modate travelers. Phil
Metschan Sr., being the best
known manager. There is a
story about Phil Metschan,
