Conservation effort pays

Weather data via satellite
ItoKur Palmer hus bten
working on sound eoriHr
vutinn pronnini on his farm
for thi? l.isl 10 ywirs. The
Kystemiitie development he
luis applied to his HWiO-acre
farm is now nearly complete.
The first diversion ditches
that Roger installed were in
l'.MU. Since then he has built
:, (:!() additional feet of
ditches. One-fourth of his
cropland acreage is now being
strip farmed. Contour farming
is being practiced on all
cropland, tie has also im
plemented a sound range
management program of ro
tation of deferred grazing and
proper grazing use.
Because of his systematic,
conscientious approach to
resource management and
conservation farming, Roger
was selected as Morrow
County's 1973 Conservation
Mun of the Year.
A device that measures
precipitation and relays in
formation on flooding will be
installed at headwaters of
Shobc Canyon this summer.
The National Weaiher Ser
vice will set up the precipita
tion gauge on the Ralph
Beamer Ranch on Balm Fork.
Beamer has donated his land
to construction and main
tenance of the gauge. The
gauge will cost the National
Weather Service $5,000.
The device would relay to a
non-orbiting satellite, such
information as precipitation,
river crests, river speeds,
temperatures and flood data.
The data would be recorded
every 15 minutes and trans
mitted to the satellite, where it
would be sent to a central
recording station on the East
Coast. The information would
then be sent to the Portland
weather office, and released
to Morrow County every
month. In case of a flash flood,
the recorded data would be
obtained in the Portland office
in a matter of minutes.
"This precipitation gauge
will help evaluate the work
done on the Shobe Canyon
watershed, said Dave Fran
zen, District Conservationist,
"and with a stream flow
gauge we could record the
downstream flow."
