Boardman potato plant
construction to begin
BOARDMAN Construc
tion will begin this week on the
$4,850,000 frozen french fried
potato processing plant at the
Port of Morrow east of here.
The new facility will be
leased by Gourmet Foods
Products Inc., Metolius, Ore.,
and will employ about 175
workers by September.
The facility is being fi
nanced through a Port of
Morrow 25-vear revenue bond

County roads in
Melting snow and ice has
played havoc with a number o
Morrow county roads.
.Many roadways were frozen
under the paved portion, and
the sudden thaw caused them
to break up, making travel
dangerous. In some instances,
roads are impassable.
Future
Pirates
at play
The Future Pirates basket
ball teams from 3rd through
6th grade of A.C. Houghton
School meet at Riverside High
gym at 10 a.m. each Saturday
for a practice session lasting
until noon. They had their first
practice Saturday.
There are intermural games
each weekday at 12 noon.
Parents or interested people
may attend at the Irrigon
gym, located in the old school.
The boys basketball teams
are Celtics. Blazers. Sonics
and Lakers. Grade school
girls play volleyball every
third day . Their teams are the
Comets. Jets and Stars.

Robert 0. Yeasting, vice
president, said there will be an
approximate $3,400,000 bond
issue for plant construction
and $1,450,000 for the cold
storage facility.
The bonds will pay an
interest rate of approximately
6.25 per cent.

avoid potholes in the pave
ment from two to three feet
deep.
"Rough pavement" signs
are in place from Lexington to

Techbuilt Corp., a Bellevue
firm.
Norman Hyder, president of
Gourmet Food Products, said
the firm already owns a plant
near Madras producing french
fried and hash brown po
tatoes. He said the second plant was
on Highway 207
bad shape
the Boardman turnoff, a
distance of 20 miles. Although
not all the pavement is broken
up, much of it will have to be
replaced.
One long-time resident ob
served, "How can you expect
the roads to withstand today's
traffic when they were built 40
years ago with the Model T in
mind''"
Base Line Road undergoes
repair almost every year,
when weather permits. Most
repair work cannot be com
pleted until the early part of
summer. In the meantime, the
most hazardous holes are
filled with rock and sand to
permit traffic, but the real
repair work is seldom com
pleted before harvest time.
Last Wednesday. Bill
Weatherford. school bus dri
ver, could not complete his
normal route and had to stop
and turn his bus around about
four miles from the end of his
route. Parents of children in
that area had to transport
their children to the wailing
bus.
As of Monday, Highway 74
was passable except for pot
holes in many parts of the

to grow as a potato producer.
Gourmet will huy potatoes

ployees will build the freeze
tunnel and cold storage plant.
Lexington to the Pendleton
turnoff is in poor shape. Base
Line Road is completely
"busted up" and Sand Hollow
Road to the Myers property
has been closed. Portions of
Butter Creek Road are broken
up.
Most residents view the
matter without complaint.
"After all," one said, "those
roads have been in worse
shape in years gone bv."

the hall Saturday at 4 p.m.

Bud Riggerstaff from Cold
Springs Grange at Pendleton
and Mrs. Charlie Wicklander

sided at the meeting. Mary
Lou Daltoso was voted in as a
new member. Initiation cere
monies will be held at the next
meeting. Feb. 16.
During the lecturer's hour
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Allen
showed slide pictures of their
recent trip to Hawaii.
A pot luck supper was held
following the meeting.
There were six tables of
pinochle in play at the card
party held last week at the
Greenfield Grange Hall,
sponsored by the Women's
Activity Committee of the
grange. Mrs. Larry Phillips
was hostess. High prize was
won by Mrs. Ed Kuhn and low
went to Mrs. Pete Peterson.
Faye Anderson and Mrs.
Jessie Hartfield received the
traveling pinochle prizes.
Mrs. Arnin Hug has re
turned home after a month's
visit during the holidays at the
home of her son-in-law and
daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Don
Wirt, in Mt. Shasta, Ca.
Mrs. Charlie Wicklander of
Portland is here for a two
week visit at the home of her
son-in-law and daughter, Mr.
and Mrs. Joe Tatone.

Port asks for
sewer service

The Port of Morrow passed
(he following resolution at a
special meeting last week:
WHEREAS, the Port of
Morrow is in the process of
issuing revenue bonds for the
construction of a food pro
cessing plant; and
WHEREAS, the necessary
Department of Environmental
Quality permits are required
for sewage disposal; and
WHEREAS, the City of
Boardman intends to improve
and expand its treatment
facilities, and desires to in
clude service to the Port of
Morrow's Food Processing
Park.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT
RESOLVED that the City of
Boardman be asked to include
domestic sewer services to the
Food Processing Park in its
system and complete Un
essential facilities to the port
properties on, or before, July
15, 1974. with any necessary
agreements to be completed
on or before Feb. 20, 1974
The Oregon Department of
Environmental Quality is
endeavoring to have the City
of Boardman handle all do
mestic waste in its area. The
port commission also voted to
hold port options open to
Mrs. Robert Tavares of
Sacramento, Ca., is here
visiting at the home of her
parents. Mr. and Mrs. W.G.
