member held a "cookie
exchange" a part of the
Christmas activities Mr.
Helen McCabe Is president of
the group.
The Beta Omega chapter of
Alpha Sigma Epsilon held a
bauar and food sale Dec. 8 at
the Legion Hall. Mrs. Linda
LaRue reported the event was
not well-attended and did not
come up to expectations as a
fund-raising event.
Willows Grange and WAC
will meet Saturday. Dec. 15.
WAC will meet at 2 p.m. in the
grange hall. A gift exchange
will be held along with the
regular meeting. A turkey
supper will be served for all
grangers at 6 p.m. A Christ
mas program will be pre
sented and Santa Claus with a
bag of treats will be on hand
following the meal. Regular
meeting of the grange will
begin at 8 p.m.
The Rainbow Girls will hold a
Christmas party Dec. 17 in the
hall. Parents of the girls are
invited to the party, and there
will be an exchange of gifts.
The Altar Society of St.
Williams Church met at the
home of Mrs. Howard Crowell.
Dec. 6. Mrs. David Baker,
president, conducted the busi
ness meeting. The program
was on decorating ideas for
Christmas.
Roy W. Lindstrom attended
the 79th Fall Reunion of
Scottish Rite of Free Masonry
held Dec. 6-8 in Baker.
Twenty-one Master Masons
were initiated into the order.
Mrs. Elmer Griffith has
returned to her home after
spending some time at the
home of her daughter and
family, Mr. and Mrs. Roy W.
Lindstrom. Mrs. Fred Papi
neau. Lexington, will be
housekeeper for Mrs. Griffith
and will be staying with her.
' The lone Junior High bas
ketball team played Condon at
lone, Dec. 8. The B team won
31-26. Kevin McCabe scored 14
points, Dennis Stefani 9, Robin
LaRue 2, and Jerry Rietmann
. The A team lost 28-45. Kevin
McCabe had 8 points, Scott
Sherer 6, Leland White 4, John
Lindstrom 2, Brian Rietmann
2, Ricky Gilbert 2, Clint
Carlson 2, and Stuart Keene 2.
The next game for the Junior
Cardinals will be at Umatilla,
Dec. 13, at 2 p.m.
The lone Schools Advisory
Committee held a building
inspection meeting, Dec. 6.
The meeting included having
lunch at the school cafeteria.
The advisory board members
then toured the buildings and
will make recommendations
to the county board on needed
repairs and remodeling for
inclusion in the budget for
next year.
The junior class of the
United Church of Christ will
meet at the home of Mrs.
Robert Rietmann, Dec. 16, to
bake cookies for their Christ
mas sharing project.
The lone School's Long
Range Planning Committee
met Dec. 3.
Discussion was held on the
feasibility of remodeling the
present shop to make a
suitable instructional area for
music. Miss Sherrie Bahr,
music instructor, sent a state
ment to the committee indi
cating she thought it might be
possible to do this.
Marvin Peterson, shop in
cfnirtnr Dresented his views
and recommendations for-
buildine a new shop facility in
the event this is the recom
mendation of the Long Range
Planning Committee.
The next meeting will be
Jan. 7 to adopt final approval
of the report to be submitted to
the county plan.

The lone American Legion
Auxiliary has sent to dozen
cookies to the Veteran'! Hos
pital In Portland. They tent
no worth of gifti for the gift
chop. The gift shop is open to
patients in the hospital so they
can choose gifts for their
families. The veteran is pro
vided the girts he selects free
of charge.
The lone High School Choir,
under the direction of Miss
Sherrie Bahr. appeared at the
Heppner Nursing Home. Dec.
12. The group provided a
Christmas program of se
lected music and carols for
residents of the home.
Mrs. Annie Keene is now
making her home at the Good
Samaritan Center in Hermi
ston. Mrs. Keene enjoys
receiving cards and letters,
and would appreciate visits
when her friends are In
the Hermiston area.
Rollo Crawford was a Port
land visitor over the weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Rietmann
and famiiy. Mr. and Mrs. Bob
Rietmann and family and
Mrs. Vera Rietmann were
Sunday visitors at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Dean Rohde of
Kennewick. The family
gathering was to honor Joe
Rietmann on his 16th birth
day, Dec. 9, and Vera's
birthday. Dec. U.
Mrs. Sandra Kroshe and
children, Kevin, Karen, Den
nis, and Paul, Pendleton, were
weekend visitors at the home
of her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Clarence Mcintosh.
Bill Tews, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Paul Tews, broke his left
shoulder in an accident, Dec.
4. He was wrestling in
physical education class with
LeRoy Rea and fell to the
floor. The left arm has been
immobilized in a cast. The
accident happended Tuesday
but swelling prevented the
fracture trom Deing set until
Friday. Bill returned to school
Monday.
The annual lone School
Christmas program will be
held Thursday, Dec. 20, in the
cafetorium at 7:30 p.m. Miss
Sherrie Bahr will be in charge.
Santa Claus with his usual bag
of treats will make an
appearance after the pro
gram. The Cardinal Club will
have a benefit drawing for the
prizes donated by local busi
ness firms during the inter
mission. Tickets are still
available for the $25 bond
donated bv Pettyjohn Oil Co.,
the lamp given by Rietmann
Hardware, a turkey given by
Bristow's Market, and a wool
blanket donated by Dobyn's
Pest Control.
Room parties for grades 1-6
will be held at the lone
Elementary School on Friday,
Dec. 21, from 12:30 to 1:30
p.m. School will be dismissed
at 1 : 30 and the buses will leave
at that time.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Petty
john were in Portland, Dec. 8.
Paul attended a meeting of the
Oregon Oil Institute at the
Cosmopolitan Hotel.
The lone volunteer fire
department responded to a
call Dec. 3 at the apartment
building, but it had been
extinguished before it arrived.
Grease in an electrical ap
pliance ignited. Mrs. Helen
Gutierrez, another occupant
of the building, sprinkled salt
on the blaze and brought it
under control. No damage was
reported.

area. They visited with Mr.
and Mrs. Pat Thornton in
Monmouth on their return

Mrs, Vera Rietmann, vice
grand. Mrs. Gladys Drake,
treasurer; and Mrs. Mike
Matthews, secretary.
The Oregon Wheat League
convened at the Sheraton
Hotel in Portland from. Dec.
2 5. Mrs. Charles Doherty won
2nd place in the cake baking
contest. Others attending
from the area were Mr. and
Mrs. Norman Nelson. Mr. and
Mrs. Don Peterson. Mr. and
Mrs. Milton Morgan, Mr. and
Mrs. Ken Smouse and Carl
Smouse.
Vandalism at the lone
Post Office on Dec. 2 brought
about a change in the opening
and closing hours of the
building. June O'Connor, post
master, posted a notice that
until further announcement is
made, the building will be
closed from 5 p.m. Saturday
until 7:30 a.m. Monday. The
vandalism is being investi
gated by post office authori
ties. The lone Garden Club will
meet Dec. 12 at the home of
Mrs. Fred Martin. There will
be a gift exchange, Christmas
program and caroling.
The Oregon Sheep Growers
Auxiliary, through its local
representative, Mrs. Henry
Krcbs, has several wool items
available to the people in the
area. Sheep pelt rugs, wool
dusters, wool "critters" and
powder puffs are among the
items listed. Proceeds from
the sale of these items are
used for the Make-It-Yourself-'
With-Wool contests sponsored s,
by the auxiliary. i
The 6th, "th, and 8th grade
classes of lone Elementary
School responded to Governor
McCall's request for an A
wareness of Energy Crisis
Week by turning off the heat
and lights in their rooms for a
day. Some of the youngsters
went a little further and
brought a cold sack lunch.

Williams, teachers, reported
some of the children wore
coats, but there were few
complaints.
The 5th and 6th grade boys
of lone Elementary School are
having a wrestling tourna
ment coached by their physi
cal education teacher, Del
LaRue. There are five weight
divisions ranging from 60
pounds to 100 pounds and over. .
A winner will be determined ;
for each division by elimina
tion matches. Each match
consists of two 2-minute
rounds or a pin. Twenty-seven
boys are taking part in the
tournament.

The lone City Council will
hold Its next meeting a week
later than usual due to the
New Year holiday. It will meet
Jan. 8 at 8 p.m. In the city hall.
The Topic Club will hold a
traveling food sale. Dec. 15.
Mrs. Vera Rietmann or Mrs.
Helen Proudfoot will accept
special orders. The 12 mem
bers of the Topic Club are
working to keep the lone
Library operating. Mrs. Riet
mann emphasizes they need
the support of the community
if they are going to do this. The
library offers many fine book
selections for children and
adults.
The 68th Oregon Sheep
Growers Convention was held
at the Imperial Hotel in
Portland. Dec. 64. Area
residents attending were Mr.
and Mrs. James West. Harold
Conn and Mr. and Mrs. Henry
Krebs. Krebs is 1st vice
president of the organization.
Mrs. Krebs was appointed
public relations chairman of
the Oregon Sheep Growers
Auxiliary.
Lori Bergstrom , daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Roland Berg
strom. was a participant in the
state Makelt-Yourself-With-Wool
contest held Dec. 6-7 in
Portland. Lori was awarded a
length of woolen yardage and
some knitting yarn.
Other activities for the
contestants were dinner at
Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor,
lunch at Lipman's Tea Room
where they also modeled their
garments, a banquet with the
Oregon Sheep Growers and
Auxiliary, and breakfast at
the Imperial Hotel.
Mrs. Roland Bergstrom,
Carley Bergstrom, and Mary
McEliigott were among the
spectators for the fashion
show finals.
CARL BERGSTROM
IN HOSPITAL
Carl Bergstrom was taken
to The Dalles General Hos
pital, Dec. 7.
He was found in his house by
his daughter, Mrs. Art Stefani
Jr., experiencing difficulty in
walking. Mrs. Stefani found
the doors locked when she first
visited the house. When Mr.
Bergstrom did not answer the
door, she obtained a key and
entered.
Mrs. Stefani reported her
father will spend a few days in
the hospital while tests are
being made.
Mr. and Mrs. Simon Win
ters, Lexington, are the par
ents of a daughter, Kirsti Lea,
born Dec. 5 at Good Shepherd
Hospital, Hermiston. This is
the Winters' first child.
Grandparents are Mr. and
Mrs. Leon Zittel, Sunnyside,
Wn., and Mrs. Millie Breed

The lone City Council held
Its regular monthly meeting
Dec. 4 in the city hall.
Stephen Anderson. La
Grande engineer, presented a
cost estimate of the proposed
water system Improvement to
the council. The improvement
will Involve a new water main
from the city well to the
reservoir on the hill north of
Highway 74. The council voted
to proceed with the project.
Mike Warren, lone High
School student body president,
presented guide lines for noise
parades that had been drawn
up by the student council.
