EIIig leadership winners named
Heppner, Ore., Gazette-Times, Thurs., Dec. 6, 1973
Krlxtl Hagur wood and Greg
Davlditon, two Heppner High
School union, are the 1973-74
winners of the Heppner Elki
Leadership Contest.
This contest recognizes and
rewards youth leaders, both
boys and girls, who are high
school Juniors and seniors.
They type of boy and girl, who
by reason of their conduct,
ability and actions, are looked
up to for guidance, counsel
and leadership. These stu
dents are recognized by their
classmates, teacheis, clergy
men, coaches, parents and
citizens as leaders.
Each applicant entered a
brochure of required facts
which Includes a summary of
activity accomplishments,
objectives in promoting the
welfare of the youth of the
community, and a letter from
a parent or other person
presenting a picture of the
family situation.
Newspaper clippings and
photographs were included
with a letter of endorsement
from a responsible person who
has observed the applicant.
The letter attests to the
applicant's character, indus
try, purposefulness, disposi
tion and general worthiness.
Judging is based 40 per cent
on leadership; 20 per cent,
citizenship appreciation; 20
per cent perserverance, re
sourcefulness and sense of
honor; 10 per cent, neatness
and arrangement of brochure ;
and 10 per cent, compliance
with instructions.

PARTY ON MONDAY
Ruth Chapter, Order of
Eastern Star, will hold a
Christmas party and gift
exchange after its regular
lodge meeting Monday, Dec.
10. Some special entertain
ment is planned.
Any Eastern Star member
from any other chapter is
invited to come and visit.
Meetings open at 8 p.m. on the
second Mondays of each
month in the Masonic Temple
in Heppner.
Both winners will be a
warded $100.
Clint Agee, chairman of the
contest for the local Elks
Lodge, reported that the
winners brochures have been
entered in district competi
tion. First place winners at
district receive $100 and their
brochurers are forward to
state competition. The boy
and girl first place winners at
the state level receive $750
each and $600 each for second.
State finalists are eligible for
National Grand Lodge contest
and the three national awards
range from $1,500 to $2,000 in
educational certificates.
Kristl, the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Ronald Haguewood,
Heppner, holds five offices in
different organizations. She is
student body secretary, As
sociated Girls League presi
dent, National Honor Society
secretary, FFA treasurer and
FHA vice-president. A sports
enthusiast, Kristi has been on
basketball and volleyball
teams for four years. She has
played the piano for the
chorus for two years. Her
involvement in 4-H includes
serving as a junior leader for
the Gooseberry Livestock
Club. She was named Cham
pion Beef Showman at the
Morrow County fair last year
and also holds a position on the
FFA judging team.
After graduation, Kristi
plans to attend Pacific Uni
versity and later Oregon State
University, majoring in ma
rine biology.
Greg, the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Davidson, Lex
ington, has been involved in
student council all four years
of high school. He is the editor
of the school newspaper, The
Hehisch. and the yearbook,
Mustang. Initiated into Na
tional Honor Society as a
sophomore, he is currently
president. Greg has appeared
in seven drama productions in
his four high school years and
is president of the newly
established Thespian Club.
This spring, he will be student
director for a one-act play. He
was junior class president and

Greg's biography was pub
lished in the 73 edition of
"Who's Who Among Out
standing American High
School Students." Winner of
the United Nations Pilgrim
age Essay contest for two
years, last spring Greg won
the district competition and
was awarded a trip to New
York City in July, 1973.
Aside from his many activi
ties, Greg also holds a part
time job at Hager's Dairy
office.
Greg plans to attend Port
land State University or Lewis
and Clark College in Portland,
majoring in business.

the state board meeting of the
Oregon Lung Association In
Portland Friday.
They are voting represen
tatives of the Eastern Region
Lung Association of Oregon.
Fifty members were present
at the dinner meeting at the
Portland Motor Motel.
Due to cost increases,
Christmas seal donators are
urged to promptly return
donations to save time and
money.
The Breath Mobile received
favorable reports throughout
the state. Plans for the
state-wide Breath Mobile
campaign are continuing.
