diffuse knapweed which has infested most of his ranch.
Harold Kerr, Morrow County
Extension Agent, has released
a small European fly, I'ro
phora Affinis, in an effort to
control the knapweed.
Early this spring, Kerr
released 200 flies in 6x6x4-ft.

One week later, the cages

were free to disperse.
The flies should have laid
eggs on the diffuse knapweed
this summer and galls of eggs
should appear on the heads of
(he seeds this Tall.
It the eggs survive winter,
larvae will appear early next
spring and will feed on the
flower seed of the knapweed.
Should this happen, the larvae
could cause up to 70 per cent
destruction of the seed.
After the larvae matures
early In June it will emerge
as a fly and begin the cycle
over again.
Diffuse knapweed is a hard
biennial herb that has spread
over many acres in Oregon,
Washington, Idaho and Mont
ana. It has become so firmly
established on land in Morrow
County that the property value
has lowered.
In Morrow County the weed
has cut the cow-per-acre
month rate from four to 25.
Cattle, sheep and wildlife find
the weed unpalatable.

County Soil Conservation Ser

controlling the weed.
Both Urophoro Affinis and
diffuse knapweed originated
in Italy; however, the. fly has
kept the weed under control.
Next June these four ranch
ers, along with other Morrow
County land owners, will know
whet her the fly can cont rol the
knapweed which has robbed
them of much of their valuable
range land.
