For ty ern young men of Morrow County who have attained the
age of twenty-one years since the firt registration one year ago,
registered with the Morrow County draft board Monday. According
to the ftimalra made by Provost Marshal General Crowder,
Morrow County fell short.
Representatives from eight grain growing counties of Oregon
and two from Washington gathered in Pendleton last Monday and
came to an agreement on a wage scale for farm labor in the
harvesting of the 1918 crop.
The merchants in nearly every county in Oregon have agreed to
sell no flour, except in emergency cases and on permits, until after
harvest. What shall we do about it in Morrow County? Those who
have flour which they wish to turn back should deliver it to some
retail dealer in the very near future.
Ttios of us who ride in automobiles, and that means nearly
everyone, are particularly interested in good roads, "specially
those that are smooth. Extensive tests recently completed in the
laboratories of the Standard Oil Co. have opened the probability of
a bright future of bum pless roads. In the past, oiled roads have had
a decided tendency to break down in places and become very
uneven after a short time. The trouble was that earlier road oils
contained only a percentage of asphaltum, tests revealed.

Data showing the vital need for wells, dams, reservoirs, and
other water projects that will greatly increase the value of vast
areas of range land in eastern Oregon will be included in the water
resources survey now under way in Oregon, it was announced by
Ormond R. Bean, chairman of the Oregon State planning boards.
Morrow County's appointment of federal and state road money
will be placed on the Heppner-Condon and Heppner-Spray roads if
recommendation of the county court made before the state
highway commission at Pendleton last evening is complied with.
Faces of local World War veterans beamed as they opened the
Wednesday morning mail. It contained notice that the bonds had
arrived in payment of the balance due on their adjusted
compensation certificates for services rendered.
Miss Genevieve Hanna, Lena grange candidate, with 3100 votes,
led the voting Saturday night at the first of the Rod") queen
' dances.
Freezing affords one of the simplest methods of preserving foods,
and with the rapid expansion of cold storage facilities available to
the public, much interest has been developed recently in methods
of processing berries, vegetables and fruits for this purpose.
Gifts from Oregon citizens, organizations, foundations and
federal government grants made to the University of Oregon
totaled more than $500,000 during the year just passed. Many of the
donations were in the form of cash, while others were gifts of books
and other materials.

At a meeting Monday night here on the grasshopper infestation in
the county, a committee was formed. With the assistance of the
state department of agriculture, the committee is going to look into
the problem further to see if a spraying program is needed.
Money know-how plus man power adds up to the Boeing Co. in
Morrow Co. On Saturday, Boeing hosted an Open House to show the
completion of the First Phase of the Boardman Development
lYojeot. Irvin Mann, state director of agriculture, praised the
Boeing Co. for its multiple land use project.
The chamber of Commerce emkwed the recommendation of the
Development Committee and favored the granting of a liquor
permit for Cal's Lounge and Cafe at their Monday meeting. The
representatives from Cal's will take this recommendation with
them next week when they appear before the Oregon Liquor
Control Commission.

ther, Harold Albei t, underwent

spent two months there during
the winter and had just returned
home when the call came to
return to Ormond Beach.
