' PLANT JKWKLS OK TIIK
HIGH OH'NTKY" was the
fasciiuitinn program presented
by Mrs. Kred Martin on
Soniporvivuins anil Scduma -
hardy succulents of rock gar
dens. Known by other names:
hen & chicks, old man &
woman, housolecks, live for
ever and stonecrop, these plants
are renaming a respected place
in home gardens and are ideal
for gardeners with limited
space and time.
Scmpervivums and Sodums
are not related to cacti although
all are succulants that store
moisture in roots and leaves to
withstand drouth and cannot
stand poor drainage. For gar
den purposes they have been
informally divided into the
following groups: "Cobwebs"
covered with spidery web,
Velvets" with downy hair on
back and front of leaves,
"Hollers" with chicks perched
on lop. smooth leaved type,
fringed and tufted and those
without chicks. Their colors
range .from pale chartreuse,
silver blue, lavender, darkest
purple, many shades of red,
from a velvet-tinged pink to
brilliant scarlet, orange-red,
d.iik rubyied, almost blues,
shades of green -pale to creamy
lint, to slate green and jade.
Color is very changeable during
the year-early spring they are
at their loveliest -thus the
filling name of "Jewell".
Planting tips Mrs. Martin
gave were: Ixxise soil with
humus and sharp sand added if
soil is heavy, plant shallow in
full sun or light. Don't over
water especially when first
planted as it takes time to form
feeder roots, !'t bloom but do
not lei go to seed.
")n not judge scmpervivums
in their first year. One may be
flat the first year, cuped the
2nd and domed the 3rd. Change
ability is part of thier fascination-like
seeing your best girl in
a dress, then shorts, then
gussied up for a dance!"
Mrs. Kd Hunt resigned as
Vice-President and the follow
ing officers were installed for
the new year, 1973-74, by Mrs.
Wallace Wolff: President, Mrs.
Lee Pettyjohn; Vice president
and treasurer, Mrs. Fred Mar
tin and Secretary, Mrs. Van
Hubbard. Guests of the Garden
Club were Mrs. Bill Ling, lone
and Mrs. Elsie Fox, Lexington.
