Irrlgon Youth Enjoy
Annual Track Moot

Parents and pre-schoolers
gathered at A C.Houghlon
School Thursday for the annual
track meet, with students (mm
kindergarten through grade 6
participating. Various athletic
events were held in the morning
and afternoon and the group
joined in a picnic lunch at noon.
Mothers !) Program
Mother's Day was observed
at the Irrigon Assembly of God
morning service with a short
program. An original poem was
read by Jyl Hohbs, and the
highschool girls' choir sang two
songs. The junior missionettes.
taught by Mrs Harvey Warner,
sang a song and also made
recipe-card holders which were
given to all the mothers present .
The mothers present who were
80 years of age were especially
honored by gifts of stationery
and a reading given by Mrs.
Earl Isom. The two mothers
over 80 were sisters. Mrs. Josie
Buchanan and Mrs. Ada Mon
tague. Mrs. LaVem Partlow, teach
er of grade 2, level 3, and Mrs.
Eleanor Sergent, 6th grade
teacher, and their classes.

went surgery at St. Anthony
Hospital in Pendleton Tuesday
to repair damage to a broken
leg sustained in motorcycle
accident.
Mrs. Warren McCoy and
daughters. Debbie McCoy and
Susan Simmons, drove to Port
land and spent Thursday and
Friday with her sister, Mrs.
Kay Cameron.
Mrs. Warren McCoy spent
Friday in Hermiston working
with the VFW Auxiliary in
selling poppies.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Kenny left
Saturday for a trip to Wyoming
and California where they will
visit friends and relatives.

Sherry Partlow rode to Forest
Grove with Randy Baker of
Boardman and their music
instructor. Mr. Weddle. The
students will participate in the
annual "Music in May" festi
val, with various activities
Thursday through Sat.
Mrs. Robert Schmoll and
children. Nicholle and Daniel,
drove to Portland Wednesday to
visit her parents. Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Blohm and her sister,
Michelle-Nicholle Blohm, of
Miami. Florida. Miss Blohm is
a stewardess with Eastern
Airlines.
Mrs. Don Kenny is recuperat
ing at her home after being
hospitalized at the Umatilla
Hospital.
Mrs. Josie Buchanan is a
patient at Good Shepherd Hos
pital, where she is being treated
for a stroke suffered on
Mother's Dav.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Isom took
their trailer house to Cutsforth
Park Wednesday for a camping
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Stewart
and Sharon, Dodie Hilling. Mrs.
Ruth McCoy and Mrs. Ellen
Reeder drove to La Grande
Thursday to attend the funeral
of Stewart 's grandmother, Mrs.
Kate Stewart.
Kindergarteners Visit
The Kindergarten class at
A.C.Houghton School, taught by
Mrs. Elaine Nelson was host to
prospective kindergarten stu
dents who visited during the
week.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cooley,
Burrell Cooley and Mrs. Vera
Cooley drove to Portland Mon
day to visit Mrs. Cooley's sister,
Mrs. Alva Whitaker, who under
went surgery at Good Samari
tan Hospital.
Kinzua
Friendship Club was held
Wednesday evening at the First
Grade Room with Pat McMinn
as hostess. High was won by
Carol Norris, second high was
won by Ruth Carey and
pinochles were won by Carol
Norris and Betty Murdock.
Others playing for the evening
were Sue Mattison, Cindy
Weaser, Rosemerry Nelson,
Evy Luper, Deena Reid, Bar
bara Heim, Irene Samples and
Sharon Bell.

Outdoor School
Heppner Elementary 6th
grade students spent the week
of May 7-11 camping at the U.
S. Forest Service installation at
Tupper.
Indian Adoptions
The camp was oriented to an
Indian theme with three cabins:
Soaring Eagle, Spotted Fawn
and Morning Dove. The instruc
tional tribes were the Klickitat
and the Clatsop. In keeping with
the theme the Chinook Jargon
was used throughout the pro
gram with such terms as
Mam-ook (work). muck-a muck
(food), tumwater (showers),
pow wow (campfire), totem
(flag) ceremony, tepee check
(cabin inspection) and many
more.
The high school counselors
took camp names during the
week: Hawk, Butch Taylor,
Buzzie, Anita Davidson: Shad
ow, Kristi Hague wood. Shorty,
Dave Daly; Bilbo, Mary
Abrams; Skeeter, Tracie Nor
ene; Tawni, Lynda Baker; Pud,
Kelwayne Haguewood; Snooks,
Tami Meador; Moose, Randy
Morris; Slick. Mark Schlieht
ing: Skeezix. Lisa Collins.
These people were assigned
responsibilities from dining hall
and program planning, recrea
tion, field study, living groups,
weather to flag duties. Always
in leadership roles or assisting
an instructor.
Resource People
During the week, resource
people from the community
area gave of themselves to
come to the camp and present
tribal instruction in areas of
conservation - environmental
study and outdoor living. Norm
Clow" of the U.S.F.S. taught a
unit on map reading and
compass use. Here, the students
were involved in locating posi
tions on a map and locating a

Bob Kelly of HMiV taught a
unit on geology. Students learn
ed of the geological origins of
Morrow County and land forms
from surrounding areas. They
also learned to identify various
types of rocks. Al Osniin of the
SCS taught a unit on soil
involving students in soil testing
of pH factors, temperatures and
physical composition.
Wildlife
(len Ward and Jack Melland,
OSGC combined efforts in the
study of wildlife. Students here
were treated to quite an array
of examples of local wildlife
from horns and hides to track
casts. Habitat and animal
instincts were studied. To
emphasize instinct, homing
pigeons were released to return
to Heppner. Dennis Martin
I'.S.F.S. instructed a unit on
plant life, identifying local
plants, their uses and values
Students found they could count
the rings of a tree to find its age
without cutting it down, an
increment bore used by groups
to check their estimates.
Errol Claire of the OSUC
Fisheries Division taught the
water unit Thursday at Bull
Prairie. Students learned of the
interrelated needs of water and
other resources, testing for
useable water and walerlife
Equipment from scuba gear to
fish shockers was examined,
demonstrated and discussed.
Bob Jepsen. local rancher,
mountain climter and outdoor
enthusisast taught a unit on
survival in the out-of-doors
involving students in building
shelters from natural ma
terials, fishing poles from
scratch and fires without
matches. Each student put
together his own survival kit
before going to outdoor school

by counselors. Skits, songs,
fellowship and fun were the
order for the evening pow wows.
Gladys Van Winkle, assisted

the meals for the week keeping
everyone more than well fed.
