Since 1958 farmers have estab
lished many fields.
The keys to successful plant
ings are good seedbeds, proper
time and rate of seeding,
careful irrigation, and proper
fertilizing. Planting in alternate
drill rows in recommended.
Kates of seeding depend on the
intended use. When the major
use is for hay or silage, the
grass should be about 30 percent
of the crop. When it is for
pasture, it should be about SO
percent.
Good management practices
are essential when the grass is
used for grazing.

Sleeping can be a hazardous
activity. Especially for certain
patients with severe lung di

The chief function of our lungs
is to deliver oxygen and remove
carbon dioxide from the blood.
When we sleep, though, our
breathing changes. In some
people the oxygen level in our
blood drops, Carlxm dioxide
increases. This till in the
balance of gases in the blood
happens to some people during

Until recently, no one had
explored this question. But Dr.
Benjamin Interiano of the
University of Rochester .Medi

severe lung disease as well as
those with heart disease and
others with obesity problems.
The comparisons during sleep
were surprising

Progress is being made on the
irrigation water pipe line being
laid west of Irrigon by Western
Empires Inc. The pumping
station is on the Columbia River
on what was known as the
Beigel place. It is now govern
ment owned and a game refuge.
A w ater trade agreement was
made with the West Extension
Irrigation Co. to supply w ater to
farmers in the area in exchange
for water supplied to Western
Empires from the irrigation
canal. An old wooden pipe line
which was long overdue for
replacement, will be elimin

have suffered from a water
shortage this spring, it is hoped
that in the future there will be
plenty of irrigation water for
this area. The pipe line is
scheduled to go into operation
this week.

"LATAR" ORCHARDGRASS
SEED AVAILABLE
PORTLAND.- Almost a mill
ion pounds of the seed of 'Latar'
orchardgrass - a high-yielding
variety that fits well into
grass-legume mixtures for hay,
pasture and silage - is available
for planting this season.
The Soil Conservation Service
reports it is the first time that
certified seed of the grass,
introduced in this country from
the Soviet Union in 1935 for
testing, has been plentiful.
The SCS values the grass
highly for conservation uses. Its
high yield of fibrous roots
improves soil tilth and in
creases water penetration and
the amount of organic matter in
the soil.
Hie grass has been shown to
be well adapted lo large areas
of Oregon, Washington and
Idaho. It Is probably adapted,
too, on Irriguted lands In
California, Nevada and Utah.
Principal features of 'Lair'
orchardgrass are late heading,
leafiness, and low fiber content.
The percentage of digestible
nutrients is high. Late maturity
and good regrowth make the
variety especially valuable in
alfalfa-grass mixtures.
Much of the present certified
seed supply was produced in
Oregon's Willamette Valley, an
area widely known for produc
tion 01 me seed of various
grasses.
