The Legend of the Easter Lily
Until the first Easter, the flower known today as the "Easter
Lily" was but a small white flower, bowing so close to the ground it
could hardly be seen.
Because of its yearning to serve humanity, it prayed to God to
become the most beautiful of white flowers. As it grew in the
Garden of Gethsemane its perfume blessed the Saviour as He knelt
in prayer. It nestled close to the Cross at Calvary and looked up into
the Saviour's face. Its purity and sweetness were shared by Jesus.
It grew near the Saviour's tomb, weighted down by the great stone
that closed the sepulchre. '
But in the glory of the Resurrection, as the Saviour stepped forth,
wherever His footsteps trod, the Easter Lily sprang to birth and
again began to look upright.
And so today, as Easter comes, the flowers of the Easter Lily
which have been looking down, suddenly grow tall and look upright
- into the Saviour's face. It faces the Easter dawn with the
assurance of everlasting life!
