Eugene for some finals, and
then came home again for
vacation. Becky drove up after
finals were over; Liz took the
bus. Classes began again March
28, after registration Monday
and Tuesday.
Baseball practice at Lane

Even though OEO and the
myriad of other initialed gov

discontinued, the Heppner
Neighborhood Center is still
functioning.
Through revenue sharing the
major programs continue at the
Neighborhood Center with Pat
Brindle as director, Jane Mc

keeper and a host of volunteers.
Nutrition Program
Wednesday night is the "night
out on the town" for many In the
over 60 s as they gather for a
well balanced dinner at the
Heppner Grade School. Num
erous food contributions augu
ment the $10. allowed for the
preparation of the meal. D.O.
Nelson has contributed potatoes
enough for the year. Anyone
having contributions of meat,
vegetables, fruits, jellies is
asked to call the Center. Several
packages of venison have been
donated. Mrs. William Brinda is
the cook and planner for this
program.
It was to combat the malnu
trition that often occurs when
an older person is eating alone,
that the Wednesday night sup

est number to attend has been
28 and in addition 6-8 trays are
sent to homes. A total of 78 have
attended the suppers this month
with one more Wednesday to go.
Judy Gochnauer and Virginia
Whitaker have provided enter
tainment following two suppers
this month. They have had
singing groups and led group
singing. During April Bob
Jespersen will have singing
groups from the elementary
school and the high school on
hand to entertain on Wednesday
night. Mr. Jespersen has the
vocal music in the Heppner
schools.
Last Wednesday's menu, a
typical one, included meat loaf,
scalloped potatoes, peas and
carrots, cake and ice cream.
The cake and ice cream was a
little extra in honor of Alice
Luttrell and Pat Brindle on
their birthdays.

end of the county.
Many Uses
The Social Security repre
sentative uses the facilities of
the Neighborhood Center on his
one day a month In Heppner.
Friends of the Neighborhood
Center maintain a clothes rack
there. Volunteers patch and
mend and wash and clean the
clothing that comes in to make
it ready for use. Right now they
are in need of children's
clothing in the smaller sizes.
They especially need children's
shoes. The Center urges people
of the area as they do their
spring house cleaning to re
member the Neighborhood
Center. They can use almost
anything.
Thursday Afternoon
Thursday afternoon is a
craft-fun time for the older
women. They meet each Thurs
day afternoon to visit and make
things. This last week, they
made realistic looking lillies
from egg carton sections. Some
of the articles they make to sell
there at the Center. Proceeds
are used to buy more craft
materials. Organizations on a
volunteer basis, provide re
freshments a month at a time.
During April, Mothers Club,
will serve the refreshments
Thursday afternoon.
The Neighborhood Center is
an information center for many
newcomers to town. Older
citizens who need a ride home
from the doctor's office can
count on a ride by calling the
Neighborhood Center. Trans
portation to and from the
Thursday afternoons or the
Wednesday suppers can be
arranged by calling the Neigh
borhood Center.
