W I N D Erosion
PROBLEM
By HAROLD KERR
Wind erosion in Morrow
County is not a new problem.
Dryland wheat Jarmers have
lived with this problem for
many years. They have de
veloped cultural practices
which have done a good job
when properly applied. The
Lexington Blow Control Dis
trict, one of two in the state, has
been an effective tool in keeping
serious erosion problems from
developing in the summerfallow
areas of the county.
The irrigation development
taking place in Morrow County
has created some new
challenges for landowners and
the Morrow Soil & Water
Conservation District super
visors. Wind erosion on sandy soils
can be controlled if proper
precautions are tiken by the
landowners.
The supervisors of the
Morrow Soil & Water Conser
vation District recognized early
in the development of newly
irrigated lands that wind ero
sion would be one of the most
serious problems facing land
developers. At their request, a
multi-agency committee was
appointed to work on a brochure
(or publication) which could be
given to lending agencies, real
estate dealers and others who
'are in contact with new land
developers.
The soil erosion committee is
working on a publication which
could be distributed to all
interested parties. In the mean
time, a new publication by the
Agriculture Research Service
entitled "How to Control Wind
Erosion" has been published.
Copies of the new bulletin have
been ordered and will be
available for public use.
The wind erosion problem and
related soil loss, air pollution,
spreading of weeds and insects
as well as loss of soil nutrients
will not be easily solved but an
organized united effort , by
everyone concerned will go a
long way towards stopping one
of our most serious problems
associated with the irrigation
development taking place in
Morrow County. -

"We see no problem with
co-existence with the Carty
nuclear program," Tierney
said. He said two flight cor
ridors used by Navy planes
would be shifted to reduce the
chance of an accident to the
plant.
Garland Swanson, president
of the port, said four nuclear
plants envisioned for construc
tion in Morrow County would
help irrigate 200,000 acres of
arid land, provide many recre
ational opportunities and wild
life refuges and make water
available for city and industrial
use.
