ELKS PRESENT MAGIC
The Heppner Elks Lodge will
present the "Wonderful World
of Magic" with Kramien, a
famous magician. The big show
will be held at 7:30 p.m., next
Monday, Dec. 4th at the

Proceeds from this interest
ing show will go to the

Tickets for the one hour and 45
minute show will be available

local merchants.
Kramien, the magician, has
performed all over the North
west with a very fine reception
every place he has appeared.
Advance publicity from other
Northwest newspapers says
skeptics become believers at his
magic show. Kramien produced
rabbits from "somewhere",
suspended a young lady in
midair and put volunteers into a
trance-like state where they
danced and performed on cue.
His assistants include a
former Miss Nevada World,
Kathleen Lison, who performed
her version of Houdini's million
dollar challenge trunk escape.
She was put into a sack tied at
the top, locked in a trunk and
the trunk was bound with ropes.
A three-sided screen with a
curtained front facing the
audience was placed around the
trunk. Kramien stepped into the
enclosure and, in less then a
matter of seconds, Miss Lison
appeared.
You won't want to miss this
fine show.

WEATHER
By DON GILLIAM
Nov. 14 -Nov. 28
Hi Low Pre.
, Preliminary investigation of
two possible nuclear power
plant sites located in Wasco and
Gilliam counties, under way for
several months, has been com
pleted by Portland General
Electric company. The utility
has been studying the sites as
possible alternates to its pro
posed nuclear development at
the Carty Reservoir site near
Boardman in Morrow county, in
the event the latter project runs
into licensing difficulties due to
its proximity to the U.S. Navy's
practice bombing range south
west of Boardman.
From Portland this week
PGE's Neil Woodley empha
sized that the Boardman
(Carty) site is still the com
pany's first choice for an
Eastern Oregon nuclear plant
but time lags built into licensing
procedures for site approval by
Oregon's Nuclear Thermal
Energy Coucil and the Atomic
Energy Commission indicate a
necessity for "banking" alter
nate sites.
Morrow county residents,
members of the Oregon Con
gressional delegation, Boeing
and PGE have been negotiat
ing, so far unsuccessfully, with
the Navy seeking a commit
ment for removal of its training
facility at Boardman.
PGE filed Notice of Intent on
the Boardman site last Feb
ruary. Located south of the city
of Boardman the site is on land
leased to the Boeing corporation
adjacent to the Navy facility. At
that time the utility said it
intends to build a thermal plant,
probably nuclear, with possible
co-owners, for operation in 1979.
At that time, the company
expected to file for site certifi
cation in February 1973 and
indicated intent to complete the
plant in 1979 or 1980.
REPRESENTATIVES of
various organizations were to
meet with members of the
Medical Society Wednesday to
explore the possibilities of se
curing another doctor for Heppner.

She is sponsored by Farmers

Miss Schlichting, 19, is five
feet, four inches tall and has
auburn hair and brown eyes.
She plans a career as a horse
show judge and trainer.
Peterson's Jewelers stated
they has a wonderful Open
House last weekend on Friday
and Saturday. About 800 people
visited the store during the two
days of their Open House.
Everyone was given a nice
ballpoint pen and all were
served homemade cookies and
coffee and there was also a
champagne punch served.
Visitors to the handsome
store registered for some fine
door prizes. There were three
very happy winners. Connie
Eng of Lexington won a
diamond necklace. Robert Eck
man won a Caravelle Watch,
and Kevin Haguewood won a
clock. The latter two people are
Heppner people.
Peterson's Grand Opening
climaxes an expansion of the
original building, much re
modeling, painting, carpeting,
and decorating. All this work
has been done over the past
several years with "business as
usual" the order of the day.
when J.O.Peterson, Frank
Turner and Burl Coxen put
together the three buildings on
Main St. Coxen a barber rented
space in the Hotel for his
barbershop. He continued rent
ing there because the hotel
keeper told him if he moved out
to his own building across the
street, he'd bring in another
barber.
In 1969, Turner, VanMarter
and Bryant moved into the
Coxen Bldg. and Peterson
Jewelers enlarged their quart
ers by taking in their former
space.
The cardinal and gold carpet
ing affords a luxuriant feeling
and look throughout the store.
Friends sent 20 potted plants
and flowers for the Grand
Opening. Peterson's always a

meeting place Friday and

the new facilities and visited
with friends as they enjoyed
refreshments.
