an electronic reader and you
have a complete identifica
tion. Sounds like science-fiction
at this point, but it has
possibilities for the future,
says Roy Nelson, admini
strator of the Livestock Divi
sion of the Oregon Depart
ment of Agriculture on re
turning from the Western
States Brand Conference the
last of October at Sparks,
Nevada
Commenting further on the
electronic route for livestock
identification. Nelson noted
that the Boeing Company, the
developer of this method, told
the conference it is planned to
have it perfected enough by
February, 1973. to demon
strate its use.
At present it has reached the
stage of an electronic reader
capable of scanning from a
distance of from five to 10 feet
and a small metal plate with

and the owner's brand for
implanting under the skin of
an animal.
It now remains for Boeing to
coat this plate with a material
that will not be rejected by the
animal and that will prevent
its slipping under the skin of
the animal.
In addition to being a means
of positive identification of the
animal, use of such a tag
would eliminate any possi
bility of attempts to alter a
brand.
Other items on the agenda
for the conference, which was
also attended by the assistant
administrator of the Livestock
Division. Gene Kunkle. in
cluded the use of health
certificates for cattle moving
between states, brand in
spection of horses and use of a
common form for brand
inspection certificates by
states.
Nelson reported mat more
states are adopting the pro
posed uniform brand in
spection form, which was
requested by the American
National Cattlemen's
Association.
In a discussion of brand
inspection for horses -- Oregon
is the only Pacific Coast state
presently enforcing brand
inspection for horses
Nevada representatives at the
conference stressed the
importance of such a program
and pointed to the growing
horse population in many
states Other states in the
conference besides Nevada
and Oregon are Washington,
Idaho. Montana. Utah. Wy
oming. California. Arizona
and New Mexico

Heppner In the fall of 1916.
she was married to Merle Kirk
and they (armed wheat land in
("larks Canyon, building their
home where the Paul Jones'
now live
In 1953. the Kirks retired
and moved to Hermiston
They kept the Devin place in
Sand Hollow where their
son-in-law and daughter, Mr
and Mrs. Don Robinson con
tinue to operate the Kirk and
Robinson ranch raising pure
bred cattle.
Mrs Kirk was active m a
number of organizations for
many of years. One of these
was the Morrow County
Wranglers An accomplished
horsewoman, she was a
charter member of Morrow
County Wranglers and served
as director several times
On moving to Hermiston she
continued her interests in
horses by joining the Umatilla
Sage Riders She helped form
the mounted drill team and
won many ribbons in competi- i
tive games She held various j
offices and was the only
woman to have been elected
president of the club
Interest in Youth
Always interested in youth
work, she helped form the first
4-H Saddle Club in Umatilla
County and served as leader
for eignt years She was
interested in promoting the
IOOF and Rebekah sponsored
United Nations Pilgrimage for
Youth. She served as area
12 years She

their problem primarily con
nected with alcohol
While the divorce rate is not
high he feels that the services
available at the Mental Health
Services will help reduce the
number In checking with the
sheriff, he found that m the
three years of 17 -19, there
were no suicides in Morrow
County Hut in one month,
there had been three suicides.

available only to professional
workers

week in Dr. McMurdo's old
office. Mr. Mitchum has hopes
of being in the new office and
set up for business by Jan, 1. A
tentative schedule would have
Mr. Mitchum in Heppner on
Monday, Wednesday and
Thursday and in Hoardman on
Friday. He may set up a small
office in Hoardman. On Tues
days he will he in Pendleton
working with the people from
Morrow County who are in the
F.OSH. He will also participate
in training sessions in group
therapy technique and attend
staff meetings of the I'matilla
Morrow County Mental Health
Department.

During the time until the
office is ready, Mr. Mitchum
has already made good use of
his time to get acquainted w ith
the people and the area. He
has met with the County court,
the doctors, the school
administration, Welfare
Commission, the Juvenile
Department and read back
issues of the Gazette-Times.
He has spoken before the
Soroptimist Club and wel
comes opportunities to speak
before other groups.

Friday with interment in Hose
