Jack Sumner"

"They're Great"
Jack Sumner gave reflec
tions ol his experiences as lour
director for a group of young
people on the Odd Fellows
United Nations tour last
summer at 1 1 if llcppner
Morrow County Chamher of
Commerce Monday
He review 'd the process of
selection lor the lour. Students
write and speak on a pre
selected Ionic uhout the I 'nil
ed Nations. The winners in the
local high school compete in a
"speak-off" on the district
level The district winner
makes the expense paid trip to
visit the United Nations.
There are 20 district w inners
in Oregon.
The tour wen! by bus :i:i!l0
miles through the midwest
enroule and ;i".rl enroute home
through Canada A variety of
Accommodations were exper
ienced on the trip. There were
motels with and without.
He said "New York is a town
of many people. Shootings
occur frequently. Members of
the group saw one from their
hotel hut were not really
aware of what had happened
since there was always a
bustle of people."
Besides their visits to the
United Nations, the group
toured many high spots in
New York. The harbor tour
around Manhattan Island.
Kockerfeller Center, saw the
amed Rockeltes, went to the
top of the Knipire State Bldg.
Jack who had made the
same trip 2d years previously
tried to pick out landmarks he
remembered from the Empire
State Bldg. They weren't
there. Time has marched on
and the old Times Bldg. had
been torn down and in its place
stands the Allied Chem Bldg.
The Astor Bldg. had been
replaced with a liighrise but
Times Square (really a
triangle) is still there.
Night or day so many of the
people seemed to be homeless.
Jack showed slides of the
trip which included a trip to
Philadelphia and up through
the New England States into
Canada.
Upon his return, he said he
was more convinced than ever
that the majority of the young
people today are worthwhile
citizens ready to assume their
responsibilities and are much
more serious-minded than
they were even a half-a-generation
ago.
While he wouldn't want to
again next year, he said he
would look forward to going
again sometime.

FIRECHIEF
FORREST BURKENBINE
SAYS-
Your best
I insurance against
fyl PrPerty Damage
I and Personal
1 1 injury is caution,
every day.
You can never be too careful when it
comes to preventing fire! That's why
good safety habits at home, at work,
at play are the rule, never the exception.
At home, check often to guard against
accumulation of flammable debris, faulty
wiring, other fire hazards. At work, obey
Fire Department regulations to the letter.
At play, make sure campfires are out,
dead out. Caution now may save lives
later.
