LAKE PKNLAND-S first sailing vessel last week was a little
dinghy with a lateen-rigged sail. It belongs to Norman Nel
son who was accompanied by Alfred Nelson, Kenneth Nel
son and John Edwards. Norman got dunked when the tricky
little txiat capsized but he reported no 01 effects. The croup
had to cut a few down trees to set into the area and there are
still a few snow banks around. But they reported It a fine
visit to a beautiful lake.
In investigating the influ
ence of water distribution on
jange utilizationand beef pro
duction, Sneva found that
every other day watering or
trailing one mile from feed
to water reduces weight gain
in yearlings and calves.
Suckling calves not having ac
cess to water also gain less
than their counterparts that
have water readily available.
"Small precipitation catch
ment systems that are inex
pensive and easy to move
might be the most economi
cal way to get best forage
utilization and livestock per
formance from millions of
acres of inadequately watered
range lands in Oregon," said
Sneva.
Sneva is researching such
systems and is using steel
watering tanks to catch rain
runoff from strips of corru
gated sheet metal. The ma
terials are small and light
enough to be hauled Into re
mote locations by jeep, mak
ing it possible to supply water
and introduce grazing live
stock into vast areas of re
mote rangeland.
Further research on the
relationship between water
hole density and animal per
formance will provide infor
mation for proper location of
the portable catchment sys
tems, said Sneva.
The 10-year project is in its
fourth year.
