Soroptimist Club of
Wallowa County was charter
ed Dec. 6, 1947, sponsored
by Soroptimist Club of La
Grande. There are 33 Ac
tive members, 5 Sustaining,
6 Life and 3 Honorary.
SERVICE PROJECTS:
A good deal of Soroptimist
time and money since the club
came to Wallowa County has
been spent improving facili
ties at Wallowa County
Hospital in Enterprise. Thou
sands of dollars of equipment
and furnisMngs have been
provided with manv tremen
dously inspiring acbeive
ments. Other services have
been $800.00 to the mother of
a large family to fly to Mayo
Clinic for cancer treatment
and scholarships for per-
OLA MAEGROSHENS, Hep
pner Club's professional
musician, was born in Port
land, Oregon to Bellroie and
Earl Hough who still main
tain their home there. All
of her school years were
spent in LaGrande, including
two years at Eastern Ore.
Normal School. She went to
Klamath Falls for her first
year in public school music
education, and remained
there 20 years until she re
turned to college to work for
her teaching degree. This led
her to Grants Pass to finish
twenty-five years of teaching.
Ola Mae has a son, Grant
Carter and a daughter-in-law,
Darlene. They have two sons,
Sean and Brett, the latter
being born in Japan where
they reside. Ola Mae moved
to Heppner in 19C1 to be
a public school music instruc
tor. She is married to re
tired rancher Emile Gro
shens. Her classification is
instrumental music, music
instruction, piano instruction.

raries of Enterprise City,
Joseph City, Wallowa City
and Wallowa County have
benefitted from Soroptimist
assistance. Two $200.00 col
lege scholarships are given,
outgrowths of the original
nursing scholarships. Re
sponding to County needs
when Cloverleaf Hall burned
a few years ago, Sorop
timists gave $400.00 worth
of tables to the replacement
building. Talent and pup
pet shows, flowers in front
of Wallowa County Court
house, Christmas presents to
Hillcrest School for Girls
are a few more of this
Club's many projects.
DOROTHY LAKE HEARD
co-owner of the Heppner Ga-lette-Times
claims Ontario
as her hometown. She taught
school before marrying news
paperman, Charlie Heard.
They have two children: Don
at Huntsville, Alabama and
Judy Becker at Gold Beach.
Don and his wife are both
computer programmers and
Judy and her husbandare both
teachers.
When her newspaper Job
allows, Dorothy likes to gar
den and refinish old furni
ture. Charlie likes to read
and travel. Their travels to
Huntsville include interesting
visits to the Kentucky Derby,
the Mardi Cras In New Or
leans and Washington D.C.
Other jaunts have taken them
to Fairbanks, Alaska, Tuc
son, Arizona, Los Angeles
and San Francisco. Dorothv
is President-Elect of the Hep
pner club.

band Garry live on a wheat
cattle ranch near lone. Two
sons, Mark and Tim, are col
lege students. Mark attends
the Univ. of Montana, and
Tim, a graduate of Lewis and
Clark College is busy with
graduate studies at Eastern
Oregon College. Blrdine Is
employed in the Morrow
County Extension Service
working with the women's
Home Economics program
and with the 4-H and Youth
Development programs. Blr
dine is a lifetime resident of
Morrow County and feels that
the growth and development
of the county is extremely
important. "Youth is our
most important product! ',
and " Morrow County has won
derful women!" are typical
of her philosophy. Birdine
Is an outstanding home maker,
seamstress, and organizerof
things artistic and clever.
She is a relatively recent
member of the club.
LENNA SMITH is Sec..
Treasurer of the Morrow
County Fair Board. She also
works as Extension-Employment
secretary In the Mor
row County Extension office.
Lenna and her husband, Glen,
have two children, a married
daughter Judy who has two
dear little daughters, and a
son Mike who Is attending
college in Eugene. Lenna was
Golden Jubilee president. She
is the leader of the club's
efforts to beautify the county
fairgrounds, and willing helps
many committees.
