Thinning of
Woodlands

writes that Woodland owners
should consider adding thin
ning to their lists of spring
tasks. Precommerclally
thinned woodlands in North
east Oregon are now pro
ducing up to 1500 pounds
of measured air dried for
age per acre. Net timber
growth following thinning has
increased up to ten times
the previous rate. Summer
water yield often increases up
to 20 percent above the
yield, from an unthlnned
stand.
Under the Rural Environ
mental Assistance Program
landowners can obtain as
sistance on up to 40 or 80
percent of their thinning
costs. This means as little
as 6 to 10 dollars will come
from his pocket.

ing difficulty finding thinning
labor the OregonState Fores
try Department will help him
locate a crew. Contact your
local Agricultural Stabiliza
tion and Conservation Service
(ASCA) office for further de
tails on the R.E.A.P. cost

Plans for
Kindergarten
1972-73
Parents of children who
will enter kindergarten next
fall, are invited to attend
the regular monthly kinder
garten meeting, May 15 at
8:00 p.m., in the Kindergar
ten room at the Heppner
Grade School.
Next year's officers will
be elected at this meeting so
it is very important that as
many attend as possible. Fat
hers are welcome as well as
the mothers.
Next year's kindergarten
pupils are invited to visit
kindergarten during the first
two weeks in May. The morn
ing session begins at 8; 30
and the afternoon sessional
12:15. The kindergarten will
not be open for visitations
following the first two weeks
in May because the kinder
garten children will be visit
ing the first grade.
Letters have been mailed to
many parents of kindergarten
age children in the Heppner,
Lexington area Informing
them of the Get-Acquainted
program for pupils. If there
is anyone with a child for
next year's kindergarten,
who has not received a let
ter, please contact Liz Cur
