Visit Eloomer Girls
Monday night, Oct. 18, the
lone Garden Club were guests
of the Hermiston Bloomer Girls
Garden Club at the well-known
local artists' home Mrs. Letha
Meyers. The evening was spent
enjoying colored slides of Mrs.
Duane Alexander's recent trip
to Japan. Mrs. Alexander's pic
tures took us to the tea and
porcelain factories and to the
many shrines and lovely gar
dens in Japan. Some gardens
were all green, while others
grew beautiful azaleas and
wisteria. One of the most fa
mous was the rock garden.
Much different than our rock
gardens as there was no vege
tation, only the moss on the
rocks. This garden had 15 large
rocks displayed in a prayerful
manner on ground covered with
small white rocks or gravel
which was raked every day. The
rocks were placed in such a
manner you could never see all
15 at the same time. From some
angles only 8 stones could be
seen. This was truly a garden
for quietness and meditation.
Few Lawns in Japan
"What few lawns are in Japan
are cut by scissors by little
ladies wearing kimonos," Mrs.
Alexander told the group.
