Four Horses and a Princess

on Tuesday of this week. Mrs.

Marquardt and Norita, and Mr.
and Mrs. T. E. Messenger were
also Portland visitors last week.
Mr. Messenger remained for a
week while Mrs. Messenger re
turned last week, he returned
on Saturday. Penny's father and
olher family members visited
her on Sunday.

Mrs. Lola Breeding is spend
ing some time in Portland vis
iting friends and relatives. She
attended a Breeding reunion at
Grant Park In Portland, and the
Spray reunion at a park there
on Sunday. Her grandchildren
Oscar and Lola Smith motored
down with her.

she will enter BMCC this fall.
She will take Sugar Foot with
her. Sugar Foot was her first
horse. She broke her to ride,
taught her the 4-H riding pat
tern and other arts of horseman
ship. At BMCC, she hopes to
take English Equitation under
Lou Levy. Eventually she would
like to show horses profession
ally and become an equitation
instructor. She says she would
like to help children, "learn
learn, learn".
She won Grand Champion
Showman last year at the Fair.

Visitors Highlight
Summer for Lonhoms
This has been a red letter
summer for Mr. and Mrs. Con-
ley Lanham. Last week their
son Lt. Col. and Mrs. M. C. Lan
ham, Michael, Mark, Jim, Cindy
and Gayle of Fairfax, Wn., vis
ited the Lanhams. They enjoyed
numerous picnics together and
tried to "keep cool."
They had hoped that their
daughter's vacation would coin
cide with the Fairfax Lanhams'
visit. It overlapped one day. Lt
Col. Lanham went to Portland
and met the plane bringing hi
sister, Mrs. Sandra Gunnarson,
Debby and Michelle up from
San Diego. They had one day
together then Mr. Lanham flew
back to Washington.
His family is visiting relatives
in Portland. Ho will return for
them later.
Mrs. Gunnarson is enjoying
visits with former school friends
which have included Linda Dun-lap.

She comes by her love of
horses naturally.
Her dad worked his way
through college at the Kellogg
Arabian Horse ranch, owned by
the Cornflake king. The ranch
was just off the campus of the
California State Polytechnical
School at Pomona and has since
been donated to the college. He
learned to know and like hors
es. Her grandfather was a horse
trader in Iowa. Another grand
father took his R and R during
World War I days by staying
on the base and going down to
the stables and riding the cav
alry horses.
Art and Horses
At BMCC she will be study
ing towards a degree in Art Ed
ucation. She has used her art
ability in many instances while
she was in high school. She
was teachers aide in Art, help
ed with the Library bulletin
boards and posters, art director
in journalism and drew pictures
for student publications.
She was a member of GAA,
Pep Club, Drill team and Girls
League. She enjoyed narrating
the style show at the Girls
League Tea this spring.
This princess rides every day,
sometimes twice a day. She
rides before school and after
school. She rides with a bridle,
with a halter or just a rope.
She rides bareback. She rides!

IRRIGON Friends of Mr. and
Mrs. Fred Murtlshaw are invit
ed to attend an open house 50th
wedding anniversary celebra
tion, Sunday, Aug. 8 from 2 to
5 p.m. at their home. It ls being
given by their son and daugh
ter, and son-in-law, Mr. and
Mrs. Jack Humbert of Folsom,
Calif., and their son and daughter-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Red
Murtishaw of Federal Way,
Wash., who are expected to ar
rive here duirng the week. Their
grandsons, Ken and Jeff Hum
bert, 13 and 11 years, have been
visiting here the past 2 weeks.
Mr. and Mrs. Murtishaw came
to Irrigon in 1947. He worked
at the Ordnance Depot until his
retirement in 1968. They are
members of the Adventist
Church and are respected in the
community.
Eldy Daugherty of New Cas
tle, Wyo., visited at the home
of her son and daughter-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Gale Shoemaker
the past week. They are taking
a week's vacation and will drive
with her to her home in New
Castle, Wyo.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Stephens
were dinner guests at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Steph
ens on July 25. It was a birthday
dinner honoring Curtiss Steph
ens, their son.
Mr. and Mrs. Dale Rodgers of
Spokane, Wash., visited her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wil
son on Saturday. They drove on
to Waitsburg, Wash., to visit her
brother, Leonard Wilson and
family.
Ray Shade of Pendleton, spent
the week here working on his
house. Improvements on his
property included installation of
city water service.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Froberg
spent the past week in Portland,
where Mr. Froberg attended a
clinic.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Stocks, Don
ald and Sherri of Tacoma, are
spending the week with Mr. and
Mrs. Don Leighton and family.
The women are cousins.
John Henner a former Irrigon
resident visited friends here last
week. His parents who live in
Haines, celebrated their 50th
wedding anniversary, the past
weekend.

of meetings at the Assembly of
God on Sunday, Aug. 1. Pastor
Donald Boe, and the "Kids
Choir" of Fruitland, Wash., were
featured in the Sunday evening
service. A buffet dinner was
served to the choir after the
meeting.
The Rev. N. D. Davidson, Ore
gon District Supt., of the As
sembly of God Churches, will be
at the Irrigon Church Sunday,
Aug. 8, to welcome the new
pastors, the Rev. and Mrs. Wes
ley Cronk.
The Columbia All Star Little
League attended the Sub Dis
trict 5 Tournament in The Dal
les. Members of the local team
were from Irrigon, Boardman,
Umatilla, Stanfield and Echo,
and included: Gail Phillips,
Terry Crowder, David Ellis, Don
Sutton, Frank Longhorn, John P.
Snyder, Clinton Eastwood, Steve
Bean, Jim Haines, Rick Hale,
Tim Perrin. Manager was Bill
1 Griffin, Coach, Jim Jenkins,
League president, pete Richards.
Their first game was Thurs
day. Columbia 4 vs. Deschutes
6. On Friday, David Ellis of Ir
rigon pitched a no hitter game
to Willow Creek, score Colum
bia 17 to 0. On Saturday they
lost to Hood River, 15-9. Terry
Crowder hit a home run In this
game. The team came in 6th
place In the tournament but the
boys were not discouraged. This
was the first time the fellows
from this area had gone to a
Little League Tournament They
stayed in foster homes and all
had a great time.

Coming Home
Mrs. Ruth McMurdo who was
recently transferred to the La
Grande Hospital is expected
home today. Her niece will
bring her home. Miss Mildred
Clowry has received word that
