Snowload Analysis
A new, 43-page booklet giv
ing snow weight information for
builders, architects, engineers
and others involved in putting
up structures is now available
at the Heppner SCS office.
Dale W. Boner, District Con
servationist for SCS, said the
booklet "Snow Load Analysis
for Oregon" was published by
the Structural Engineers Assn.
of Oregon in cooperation with
the USDA Soil Conservation Ser
vice, Oregon State University,
and State Engineer.
Authors are Jerry Estoup,
structural engineer and chair
man of the SEAO Snow Load
Committee, and Tom George,
SCS snow survey supervisor in
Oregon.
People building in mountain
areas have the biggest snow
load problems, Estoup said, but
many building at lower eleva
tions mistakenly think snow
weight is not a problem. The
heavy snow . during the winter
of 1968-69 proved otherwise
when several buildings in the
Willamette Valley collapsed and
others at mid-elevations were
damaged or destroyed, he said.
Snow surveyors collect data
regularly each winter and spring
on snow depth and weight as
a part of the cooperative water
supply forecast administered by
SCS. Mr. Boner said. This data
was plotted on graphs to show
the maximum snow and weight
that can be expected at var
ious elevations in each county
of the state.
The ground snow weight is
adjusted to reflect loss that ne.
cuts to snow that accumulates
on a roof and is affected by
varying and wind exposures.
The new Oregon publication is
believed to be the first of its
kind to show anticipated local
snow weight in graph form for
an entire state. Copies are be
ing distributed by SEAO to ap
propriate local city and county
officials. Additional copies are
available directly from Structur
al Engineers Association of Ore
gon, P. O. Box 8751, Portland for
$1.50 a copy.

The price of everything seems to go up and up f except
electricity. It goes on and on .
Just about everything costs a lot more today than it did
10 or 20 years ago or even one year ago. Everything ex
cept the kilowatt hour cost of ELECTRIC POWER.
Home electric rates are such that the first 240 k.w.h.
purchased each month are the most expensive. DO SOME
CHECKING. The energy you use for electric heating or
cooling is usually purchased at a rate as low or lower per
B.T.U. than any other form of energy.
Be safe-clean-and comfortable with electricity.
The more electric power you use the more you reduce the
unit cost of each kilowatt hour used.
