- TIMES, Thursday. Julf 15. 1971
By MARIE McQUABRIE
The barbecue Sunday turned
out to be a real success. We
are sorry for those who were
not able to attend, as they miss
ed a good time. Eddie Gunder-
son was head of the play and
he planned a two-ball foursome
for us. The steaks were yummy
off the barbecue pit and the
salads, desserts and trench
bread were a great compliment
to our steaks.
The highlight of the barbecue
was that Francis Doherty made
a hole-in-one. Quite an honor,
and we congratulate you Fran
cis. He paid off with drinks for
everyone, which is the only
painful part of making a hole-
in -one. It was made on our
temporary hole No. 4, where you
shoot across the creek right
next to the No. 2 green. The
No. 4 green Is one of the tough
est ones on which to get the
ball in the cup. Francis did it
just right.
Dee Grlbble and Eddie Gun-
derson were low In the two-ball
foursome and Beverly Gunder-
son and Ed Schaffitz won two
balls for the most strokes.
We hope we have another bar
becue right soon, as summer is
quickly getting away from us,
and they surely are fun to have
either on a Saturday or Sun
day. The girls today played
'speck". If you don't know
what that is, here is the ex
planation. You keep score of the
one with the longest drive, first
on the green, closest to the pin
and first one in the cup. When
your game is over, you add to
see who has the most marks for
the four things. Vi Lanham had
10 specks for the day and won
a ball. Helen Schaffitz received
a prize for playing the most
consistent game. Beverly Gun
derson had a sequence of 5, 6
v
La Svi
Over The
Tee Cup
and 7 on her card and received
a ball for same. The day was
perfect as far as the weather
went This is the kind or day
that Is made for golfingand
especially In the morning. Hope
more of you gals can come out
and Join the bunch and have
an easy relaxing morning.
Mr. Duncan, our pro, reports
that the lessons are going fine.
He has more than 13 pupils and
from all reports, his scholars are
pleased with him. Sometimes,
changing your game will make
your score higher for a little
while, but soon you will begin
to improve and enjoy your golf
more. You can still sign up at
Central Market for lessons.
There are a few men that are
taking advantage of having a
pro here, but more could bene
fit by having a few lessons from
Mr. Duncan.
Canning Tomatoes
Up-to-date directions call for
for the addition of 2 tsp of eith
er lemon Juice or vinegar for
quart of tomatoes. If tomatoes
canned in a boiling water bath
are not suffiicently acid, there
Is the danger of Clostridium bot
ulinum, if present, will grow.
These bacteria produce toxin
that causes botulism which can
be fatal if even a small amount
is consumed.
