County Officials
To Hawaii Meet
Judge and Mrs. Taul Jones
and County Clerk Sadie ParrUh
returned March 10 from a trip
to Hawaii. Judge Jones Is vice
president of the League of Ore
gon Counties and Mrs. Parrlsh
is president of the Oregon Clerks
and Recorders Assn. and they
were sent as delegates to the
conference of the Western region.
There are some 126 Islands In
that area, most of them very
tiny. They toured the main Is
lands, Mrs. Parrlsh's luggage
was lost and was finally located
just before they boarded the Jet
for the homeward trip.
Hawaiian pineapple is soon to
ccome a thing or me past.
Cheap labor In Africa and Korea
Is soon to kill the pineapple in
dustry in Hawaii. The land is
to be put Into sugar cane since
that la a crop that can be farm
ed mechanically.
Hawaiians say their land is
growing. An eruption of the vol
cano, Mauna Loa In 1956 add
ed 500 acres of land. No one
was killed by this eruption
which spewed almost a square
mile of land Into the sea.
They toured the crater and
various parts of the main Is
lands. Orchids grow In great
profusion as do many other
flowers and plants. In bloom
were poinsettias and they were
about three feet tall.
Judge Jones was surprised by
the banyan trees whose im
mense roots sometimes spread
over acres of area.
They were on a three hour
boat cruise on their Pearl Har
bor tour.
They were told by a driver
that the Catholic and Mormon
religions are the most popular
there.
Mrs. Parrish was impressed by
the fact that hardly anyone
honks his horn in Hawaii, some
thing they surely appreciated.
They visited the world's largest
shopping center.
A fire broke out on the 22nd
floor of the hotel where they
stayed. The doorman said this
was the third time the hotel had
suffered from arson and they
had not caught the culprit.

Rep. Xrria Mann's Irrigation
Monday. This bill whlc hwould
finance bill had a big boost
create a State water fund loan
bank passed the House Natural
Resources Committee.
Bill sponsor, Rep. Mann, feels
very confident this time that the
bill will pass both houses. It
failed in the 1969 session.
Only change In this present
bill form Is lowering the amount
of money raised to 2 of the
state's valuation instead of 3.
This reduces the amount of
money available to ' loan from
$480 million to $320 million.
Robert Woehler stated Tues
day Rep. Mann already, has the
assurances of Gov. Tom McCall
that he will sign the bill putting
It on the ballot for 1972. It
woud then be up for tho people
to approve In a referendum.
One factor that has changed
In this legislative session la the
support It has received In Went
em Oregon.
There had been some criticism
that It was an Eastern Oregon
bill before.
I think a lot of small land
owners and Irrigation districts
have learned that this bill could .
help them solve some of their,
problems and provide them with ;
a source of capital for develop-
ment," Mann said. '
