Irrigon Couple Honored on Anniversary

IRRIGON Mr. and Mrs. Don
Kenney were honored on their
25th wedding anniversary, Dec.
12 at their home in Irrigon,
when 70 friends and relatives
gathered to wish them well. Of
their 5 children, all were pres
ont except Jim, of Eugene, who
plans to visit this weekend. Oth
er members of the family in
clude George, who is attending
OSU. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Kenney
of Hermiston, Mr. and Mrs.
Dean (Fay) Herman of Waits
burg, Mr. and Mrs. Neal (Judy)
Tooze of Portland.
The beautiful anniversary
cake was made by a near
neighbor, Karen Cooley.
Don and Freda Kenney have
lived In Irrigon most of their
lives and together they have
watched the area grow and de
velop. Don came to Irrigon in
1935 and Freda was 8 months
old when she came with her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Fred
rickson from Idaho. Mrs. Ken
ney's parents were among the
first to have a wall telephone
in Irrigon. Electricity nas
brought many changes too. Don
Kenney is an active board mem
ber of Umatilla Electric Co-op
and has been for many years.
He has also been active in the
Soil Conservation District for 20
years.
Don Kenney had heart surgery
last winter, so he doesn't work
as hard as he used to, but still
feeds cattle and drives tractor
on his ranch.
The Assembly of God Sunday
School and the Choir, directed
by LaVelle Partlow, presented
the annual Christmas program
and Cantata, "The Night The
Angels Sang", on Sunday eve
ning. Tom Stewart narrated the
Christmas story, which was
pantomined as the choir sang.
Jyl Hobbs and Jimmy Hinkley
were Mary and Joseph, with
Larry Wilson the inn keeper.
! Mrs. Perry Pummel sang a solo.
Preceding the Cantata there
were exercises by the Sunday
School classes, including, nurs
ery class, Sheryl Partlow, teach
er. The Children Church Choir,
led by Mrs. Al Partlow sang.
The Beginner class, whose
teacher Is Mrs. Chester Wilson
gave "The Christmas Story",
and a Merry Christmas scroll

Say 65 Year Olds
Marriage relationships tend
to improve with age, and con
tribute to the emotional and
mental health of the partners,
according to recent research.
Mrs. Roberta Frasier, Oregon
State University Extension fam
ily life specialist, says that of
400 couples 65 years of age and
older participating in the re
search study, most rated their
marriages better at this stage
of life than earlier. More than
90 per cent of the couples rat
ed their current marriages as
very happy or happy.
Respect and sharing common
interests were the two most im
portant characteristics of a
happy marriage, reported the
older couples. They expressed a
high degree of satisfaction with
the love shown them by then-
mates. Also rewarding in the
retirement years were compan
ionship and their ability to ex
press true feelings to each oth
er. Different values and philoso
phies of life and lack of mutual
interest were the most trouble
some aspects reported, says Mrs.
Frasier.
Older husbands expressed a
lack of satisfaction in their mar
riage with the way the wife ful
filled their need for self respect.
Wives, in turn, reported unsat
isfying the way their hus
bands communicated with
them.

whoso teacher is Mrs. H. C. War
ner, were angels in the cantata.
Junior boys' teacher is Mrs.
Floyd Mesteth, and this class
passed out the Chirstmas treats
at the dose of the program.
From Alaska
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Steagall,
Wally, Rocky and Jean, of Jun
eau, Alaska are here visiting
his mother, Mrs. James McRae
and other members of the fam
ily. Mr. Steagall is employed
in dam construction in Alaska.
Their son Wally entered St.
Anthony hospital in Pendleton
last week for knee surgery.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wilson of
Rosemead. Calif., are visiting
his parents ami other relative?
here this week.
Kdg to Start
A. C. Houghton Kindergarten
for North Morrow Co. will begin
Jan. 11 and run till May 31
this year. Elaine Nelson of
Boardman will be the teacher.
Mrs. Charles Wilson lias been
in Waitsburg, Wn., for 2 weeks
with her son and family. Mr.
and Mrs. Leonard Wilson. Dur
ing this time Leonard Wilson
has been hospitalized, with sur
gery on his back, to correct an
old injury.
School Program Well Attended
A. C. Houghton School pre
sented a program "Christmas
1970" to a large crowd, Thurs
day eening. The entire sehool
participated in singing Christ
mas Carols, with the audience
joining in on some of the favor
ites. Santa Claus arrived with
a jolly "Ho Ho Ho", at the close
of the program. Christmas treats
were provided by the 1TA.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Eppenbach
have returned to Irrigon from
Ames, Iowa, where he has com
pleted his course of study and
received his Masters Degree

The smell of Christmas Is in
the air at the Phil Mahoneys as
Mrs. Mahoney makes the ump
teenth batch of candy. Christ
mas with all the kids will be
Christmas Eve. Guests will be
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Mahoney and
family, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Hall
and family, both of Heppner,
and Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Smith
of Albany.
At Jim Hagers
Christmas Eve will see child
ren and grandchildren at the
Jim Hagers. Mr. and Mrs. Bob
Hager, Cherrie and Valinda and
Mr. and Mrs. Ken Evans, Swane
and Gib will be there.
The Bob Hagers will go to
Milton-Freewater the next day
to spend a couple of days with
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Har
old Akes.
Mrs. Bob Hager's sister, Carol
Akes was here for a couple of
days last weekend. She is at
tending Walla Walla Communi
ty College.
