FIFTY YEARS AGO
Thundery, January 29. 1920
Walter Rood sold his Hepp-
wcr Flat ranch, consisting of 960
acres of fine wheat land, to Alex
Green this week. The price paid
hv Mr. Green was $55,000. The
deal was handled by Roy V.
Whiteis. Mr. Green Is iarming
the Taylor Hill ranch Just south
of town. This place was sold re
cently to Ewing P. Berry or Lex
ington. We understand that Mr.
Rood will go into the stock bus
iness. Matt Halvorsen, formerly a
merchant in lone and one of the
large wheat producers of that
section, spent Saturday in Hepp
ner and attended a meeting of
the Morrow County Farm Bur
eau. Mrs. Wesley Brannon, Mrs.
Henry Selby and Kenneth Bleak
man, all of Heppner, are recup
erating from surgery performed
in Condon by Dr. Hayden of that
city.
J. D. Butcher, traveling audi
tor for the Pacific Telephone and
Telegraph Co., was up from
Portland a few days last week.
He went to Lexington on Satur
day in company with local man
ager, Ralph E. Crego and Chief
operator, Miss Flossie Barlow,
where they changed the switch
board from the Burgoyne store
to the Vance residence.
A real county fair is what the
members of the Morrow County
Farm Bureau have had in mind
for some time, and their Ideas
were brought out clearly last
Saturday evening when a com
mittee from their organization
met in the office of County
Agent Hunt with a committee
from the Heppner Commercial
Club.
A. Henrikson, Cecil stock
man, was appointed Chairman
and S. A. Pattison, secretary of
the Commercial club was ap
pointed to keep the records of
the meeting.
A committee consisting . of
nine men was appointed to
draft a definite plan for the or
ganization to be submitted to
the county court at its next reg
ular meeting. The committee
consists of L. A. Hunt, F. R.
Brown, C. R. Paine, Matt T.
Hughes, Jack Hynd, John Wight-
man, S. A. Pattison M. D. Clark
and A. Henrikson.
Notes From

About "In This House
of
Brede" by Rumer Godden.
Philippa Talbot Is a success
ful London career woman turn
ed 40 when she feels the call
of the religious life. "I thought
I was very well as I was," she
told Brede Sacristan later, "a
human, balanced person with a
reasonable record; with the luck
of having money, friends, love.
Only suddenly it wasn't
enough." She is one of the most
attractive and sympathetic
characters in Rumer Godden's
long and well-loved fictional
roster.
This, then is a story of the
life in an enclosed house df
nuns and of the relevance of
this contemplative existence to
our changing world a challeng
ing theme. The novel unfolds
chiefly through Philippa, from
the day of her entrance, through
one crisis of mind and heart to
another, until she faces an ul
timate and almost unbearable
sacrifice. Woven with her per-
sonal story is a much larger
one the story of the House, its
history and the present inmates
who have vowed to live and die
within its walls.
The nunus are English Bene
dictines whose House is centur
ies old in tradition, a strong
hold of faith and prayer, yet
they are up-to-date, alive, aware
of the world and matter of
fact. In Rumer Godden's hands,
they are fully realized individ
uals whom we come to know
and care about, adding rich
dimensions to the novel as they
live out their vocations.
Through them, the book gives
us on the outside a picture of
how everyday religious life is
lived, day In, day out "without
sloth or haste" as St. Benedict's
Rule lays down. Part of the nov
el's attraction Is its clear and
abundant showing of the mean
ing of that life to those who live
it, of its rules and ritual and
this makes the most uncommon
and fascinating "shop".
It is the mark of Rumer God
den's unique magic that she im
merses the reader wholly and
unforgettably In the cloistered
yet universal existence of her
House of Brede.
