Things with Greenery were
demonstrated Monday evening
by the Rev. Edwin Cutting at
the Heppner Carden Club meet
ing at the Methodist Church
basement.
Rev. and Mrs. Cutting had a
greenhouse and nursery in Min
nesota before entering the min
istry. He recommends fir as the
best in Christmas trees for the
lasting quality. Pine will stand
up good. Spruce needles drop
fast but is beautiful outside.
Evergreens may be made fire
resistant by dipping them in
water glass (sodium silicate
from the drug store).
Wreaths
Rev. Cutting recommended 14'
gauge wire for the wreath base.
Branch tips in 8" sprigs were
cut from boughs. Overlapped
sprigs were wrapped to the
wreath wire with 24 gauge wire
with 2 winds around each sprig
which should be angled to out

base the sprigs stripped of need

Candles, if used, should be
stuck in after the first row
was completed. Balls, orna
ments, cone, nuts, wild rose
hips, dried stock may all be
added to the wreaths and cen
terpieces as Individuals like.

sistance.

Mr. McCabe, a life time resi
dent of lone, died at Pioneer
Memorial HosDital Dec. 9. He
was born Dec. 5. 1912 at lone,
the son of Alonzo McCabe ana
Lola Olden McCabe. He was
married to Helen Lindsay on
Aug. 19, 1945 at lone. He was
a naval veteran of World War

ter a phone call earlier in the
day from her in New York, her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lowell
Gribble, met them in Portland
that evening. Mrs. Derrick will
remain in the states until her
husband, Sgt. Derrick, completes
his 4 years with the Air Force.

bread products, was $12.05, dis
played by the Morrow County
ladies. This money is to be do
nated to the Salvation Army.
Among the Interesting things
talked about at the League
meeting was a sclent Lst's talk
on alcohol made from wheat
and utilization of the by-products
for cattle feed. (We have
Vw.n told this alcohol would be
an ideal additive for gasoline
to replace tetraethyl lead, ana
the by-products for feed would
make the program economically
feasible).
