New Igran herbicide isn't perfect.
Nothing is. But it will control such tough
weeds as gromwell, henbit, tarweed,
-urple mustard, dogfennel, speedwell,
duckweed, and Pacific meadow foxtail.
And it can be sprayed either fall or
spring; anytime until weeds
are four inches high.
Here are some commonly asked
questions that you also may have in
evaluating the usefulness
of Igran for your wheat program.
What other weeds and grasses will it control?
Catchweed, pennycress, bedstraw, china lettuce,
shepherdspurse, knotweed and most other annual
broadleaf and grassy weeds that are a problem in
Northwest wheat fields.
What weeds are not controlled by Igran?
It won't do a good enough job on crowfoot (butter
cup), knawal, lupine, wild carrot, wild oats, bulbous
bluegrass, tansey mustard, bindweed, Canada thistle.
How about cheatgrass?
Under certain conditions, Igran has given good cheat
grass control. In other cases control has been poor.
Our experience indicates that the shorter the period
between application and cheat germination, the bet
. tr the control. In post-emergence spring applications,
better control has occurred under warmer tempera
tures and when cheat is in early seedling stage. Even
though cheat control has varied, Igran has often
given sufficient control to allow wheat to make a crop.
What about spray timing?
Igran is the first herbicide that can be applied pie
emergence ... at planting time or shortly after. Or it
can be applied post-emergence, either this fall or
next spring, anytime until weeds are 4 inches high.
What's the big plus for pre-emergence use?
Applying Igran at planting or shortly after planting
gets the herbicide on early, before any weeds or
grasses emerge to compete with the crop for moisture
or nutrients. When applied during the planting oper
ation, it can also save an extra trip over the field. This
eliminates the soil erosion problem caused by wheel
tracks.
How safe is Igran to wheat?
Wheat has a higher tolerance for Igran than it has for
any other herbicide on the market. This is why Igran
can even go on at planting time.
How does Igran actually work?
When applied pre-emergence, before weeds are up,
Igran is carried down into the soil by rain. There it is
absorbed by the weeds as the weed seeds germinate.
Igran disrupts the photosynthesis process, the plant
yellows and, soon after breaking ground, dies. In a
post-emergence application, after weeds are up,
Igran works the same way except that it kills the
above-ground part of the weeds on contact a3 well as
controlling later weeds as they germinate.
Can Igran go on by air?
Yes, aerial applications work just as well as ground ' '
sprays, provided the application is uniform.
What about following with other crops?
There's no problem with planting peas, lentils, or fall
barley on Igran treated wheatland. In fact, there's no
problem with replanting wheat if some should be
winterkilled.
How thoroughly has Igran been tested?
Tests have been going on in Idaho, Washington and
Oregon for the past 5 years. Last year alone some 60
growers used it in large scale field trials in these 3
states. That's how we know that Igran does the job ort
so many of the weeds that 2,4-D won't get. ,
How can I get more information ?
If you still have questions about how Igran may fit
your particular growing situation, we'll be glad to
help. Just drop a line to Geigy Agricultural Chemi
cals, Division of Geigy Chemical Corporation,
Ardsley, New York 10502. Igran bg GeiQlJ
