..Cutting calories? You might
consider canning fruits without
sugar. Extension specialists at
Oregon State University say
that sugar is not needed to pre
vent spoilage.
For more information on food
preservation ask your County
Extension office for a free bul
letln, "Home Canning of Fruits
and Vegetables." Bulletins on

New labeling laws went Into
effect recently for consumer pro
tection. Other labeling laws
have been in force several years.
Unfortunately some people don't
bother to read them so they are
the losers.
Almost every chore a home-
maker undertakes involves the
use of some chemical product
that's hazardous. These products
state clearly "Keep away from
children" or other warnings, so
be careful how they're stored or
whore they are placed tempor
arily. To really get the protection
intended there must be action
on the part of the consumer.
Read and heed the label.
Wooden salad bowls and plat
ters add both charm and utility
to your picnic or dining table.
But some people have the idea
they can't be washed in sudsy
water.
There's danger in unwashed
woodenware. For example, part
icles of meat left in a cutting
board breed bacteria. Or salad
oils left sticking to a bowl eas
ily become rancid.
To clean wooden bowls or oth
er utensils, dip in warm, sudsy
water but do not soak. Rinse
immediately and wipe with a
a towel. Let dry in a well-ventilated
place before putting
away.
Give special attention to chop
ping boards. Knife marks may
leave ridges where bacteria can
multiply. Rub the ridges down
occasionally with sandpaper to
restore the smooth surface which
will be easier to keep clean.
How much does it cost to con
sult an interior designer? We
asked Mrs. Dorothy Brown, our
extension home furnishings spe
cialist at Oregon State Univer
sity. She says they have three
different methods for charging
for their services.
Consultation may be arranged
for an hourly fee. A lot of in
formation and advice can be giv
en in an hour.
For residential work, designers
get their pay also by charging
clients the usual retail price for
furnishings which they in turn
buy at a discount from the
wholesaler. For commercial jobs,
designers receive a percentage
of the cost of the job, just as
architects do.
Odors In the refrigerator can't
be blamed entirely on the kinds
of food you put inside. The
trouble may be spilled food or
Improper care.
Automatic defrost refrigerat
ors have drains which may be
come clogged wth algae (sim
ilar to molds) which grow on
rood . spills. Repairmen tell
this is a major cause of odors
A solution of equal parts . of
vinegar and water poured
through the drain tubes is ef
fective in preventing growth of
aigae.
Although defrosting Is auto
matic the inside of the refriger
ator should be washed with
solution of water and baking so
da about twice a month.
If nylon slips cling to the
body, use a fabric softener in
the last rinse water when laun
dering. Avoid over-drying in the
tumble dryer as this produces
static electricity in some man
made fibers.
Fabric softener should not be
confused with a water softener.
The latter is used for water con
taining hardness minerals.
It's time to think about back
to-school clothes. Elaine Carlson,
Oregon State University Exten
sion clothing specialist, says
parents shouldn t forget to teach
their clothes-hungry teenagers
that there s also upkeep cost.
On some "dry-clean only"
garments, upkeep can be terrif
ic. A good example mght be
a white wool skirt. If youngsters
are made aware of these added
costs, perhaps they 11 be more
shrewd when they buy.
Money can be saved by
switching color choices, looking
lor washable items, or color key
ing their clothes so they can
all go In the same cleaner load.
We still get many questions
about biodegradable detergents.
For the past four years all of
the major detergents as well as
numerous others have been bio
degradable. The label usually does not use
the term "biodegradable" by
mutual agreement of the manu
facturers. This didn't seem nec
essary since all the products
were to have this characterist
ic. Biodegradable means that the
residue will be broken down in

Hints Given

Don't mar the fun of summer
picnics by risky food handling.
So-called "food poisoning" may
result from foods carried on out
ings without proper refrigera
tion. To be sure you understand
how to protect your family from
illness caused by harmful bac
teria in food, ask your county
extension office for a free bul
letin. "Keeping Food Safe to
Eat."
Make your electric range sur
face units last longer through
proper usage. Repairmen tell us
that homemakers often put large
canners or lelly kettles on the
small unit. This tends to restrict
the air circulation and may ov
erheat the element and drip pan.
Aluminum drip pans have some
times melted under such condit
ions. For pointers on pickle making,

The least energy is used when

this will get you fin place; By
comparison you use 30 per cent

energy than when lying down.
It takes almost 300 per cent
