posthumously awarded Specialist 4 Ronald F. Neal are received
by his father Ernest Neal. Condon, on May 1. Specialist Neal
was killed by enemy gunfire in Vietnam on January 17. Mak
ing the presentation is Colonel William Whelan, commanding

Citation accompanying the
young soldier's Bronze Star Med
al read:
"For heroism In connection
with military operations against
a hostile force: Specialist 4 Neal
distinguished himself by heroic
actions on 17 January 1969,
while serving with A Troop, 3rd
Squadron, 4th Cavalry, In the
Republic of Vietnam. While con
ducting a sweep mission, A
Troop suddenly came under in
tense enemy fire from an un
known-sized enemy force. Spec
ialist Neal was performing his
Job inside the tank, loading the
main gun, when the .50 caliber
machine gun suddenly quit fir
ing. With complete disregard for
his own safety, Specialist Neal
Jackson C. Calvin
Dies at Anchorage
Jackson C. Calvin, 84, former
Heppner resident, died May 9,
after several months illness, at
Ridgeview Manor Nursing Home
In Anchorage. Alaska, according
to information received here by
O. A. Mlnton.
Mr. Calvin was born February
6. 1885. He served in the U. S.
Navy from 1903 to 1907. and re
tired from General Hospital In
Kansas City, Mo. He came to
Heppner in 1958 to make his
home with the late Richard C.
Calvin and family. In I960 the
family moved to Alaska to make
their home, and Mrs. Marguer
ite Calvin continues to make her
home in Anchorage.

were Mrs. Palmer, Mrs. Tews,
Mrs. McElligott, Mrs. Chllders,
Mrs. Peterson. Grandmothers
were Mrs. Bill Bergstrom, Mrs.
Victor Lovgren, and Mrs. Mar
ion Palmer. Mrs. Garry Tunis
was also a guest representing
the extension office. Cookies,
coffee, punch and tea were
served. Paper corsages were giv
en to everyone.

College Who's Who Picks Parti McCoin
Pattl McCoin of lone has been
chosen for the 1968-69 edition of
Who's Who Among Students in
American Junior Colleges, one
of 13 to be selected from Blue
Mountain Community College.
Mrs. McCoin is the former
Pattl Pettyjohn, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Lee Pettyjohn of lone
and her husband, Bill McCoin,
is also a student at the college.
