Has Many Activities
The 1969 Conservation Man of
the Year is a member of the
Wheatgrowers , Association, Ore
gon wneat League, ana Mor
row County Livestock Growers
Association. -
He is active in lodges, church
and community affairs, being a
member of the Heppner Elks,
lone Masonic lodge, the Royal
Arch Masons, the Rhea Creek
Grange, the Valby Lutheran
church, and the lone PTA. He is
a past master of the Rhea Creek
Grange, and Ls on the Valby
church council. His wife. Beth,
shares his wide interests and is
also a member of the Eastern
Star at lone.
Rudy is also a member of the
Morrow county weed advisory
committee.
The Conservation Man is pret
ty much a do-it-yourself ranch
er. With his father, he does
most of the ranch work, con
ducts his own weed spray pro
gram, builds his own ditches
with a dozer and then seeds
them as soon as they settle. He
built a sizeable dam near his
home last year, but heavy snow
melt breached it early this year.
About the only hired help is
that of a truck driver during
harvest season.
Standing on the site where
pioneers came to establish the
community of Gooseberry, one
gets the feeling that they would
be proud of the choice of Rudy
Bergstrom as 1969 Conservation
Man of the Year and would be
well pleased of the manner in
which he and his father, Bill
Bergstrom, have been stewards
of the soil they once worked.
