State Water Needs Report
Planned for Public Meeting
Governor Tom McCall an
nounces that the public presen
tation of the Oregon Ultimate
Needs Water Study will be
made Wednesday, May 7, at 2:00
p.m., in the Fine Arts auditor
ium at Willamette University.
The presentation will be made
by the governor and the State
Water Resources board which
has conducted the study during
the past four years to determ
ine whether or not Oregon has
a surplus of water to meet its
future requirements. Oregon is
the first Northwest state to
complete such a far-reaching
study of water needs, McCall
said. ,
The study, authorized by the
1965 legislature, has been con
ducted by the Water Resources
board to identify Oregon's ulti
mate or long-range water re
quirements for all beneficial
uses including municipal. Irri
gation, power development, in
dustrial, recreation, wildlife and
fish life uses, water quality and

Pesticide Storage
Risky, Says Agent
This cardinal rule of pesticide
accident prevention is of special
significance in the spring when
farmers and their wives increase
their purchases of pesticides for
farm, home, and garden use,
notes Harold Kerr, county ex
tension agent.
Getting the "giant economy
size" will save money when it
comes to soap and toothpaste.
You can always store these com
modities for future use. Storage
of leftover pesticides is a more
riskv DroDosition. Each year
hundreds of children are hospit
alized after getting into pesti
cides their parents thought were
safely stored away.
Disposal of leitover pesticiaes
is also risky if you don't follow
oroner Drocedures. Improper dis
posal can result in crop losses,
the poisoning of livestock, illeg
al residues, or pollution of your
water system.
Kerr recommends avoiding
Desticide "storage" and "dispo
sal" hazards by purchasing only
as much pesticide as you need
to solve the immediate problem
at hand.

Sheep Foot Rot
Research Slated
A $34,000 research budget has
been set at Oregon State Unl
versity for seeking a preventive
for foot rot and other loot dls
eases of the Oregon sheep pop
ulation. The announcement was
made to the Oegon Sheep Grow
ers Association by Doug Cham
bers. Marion county sheep grow
er and member of the OSU Ad
visory Council Chambers report
ed to the Sheep Growers at an
executive meeting of the Sheep
Growers Association in Corval
lis. April 18.
Chambers said foot rot has
been a serious problem for many
years in Wsetern Oregon in par
ticular and that a preventive
would be of great value to the
sheep industry.
Steve Eyman, Clackamas
County, chairman of legislative
committee for the Oregon Sheep
Growers, reported on bills of in
terest to sheepmen. Named as
the most Important of the state
legislation was the field burn
ing bills now being considered.
Eyman said curtailment of field
burning, especially on rye grass
fields, would seriously harm
the sheep growers of western
Oregon. Some 60,000 lambs are
winter grazed on rye grass
fields in the Willamette Valley.
Obviously, Eyman said, any
thing that curtails the growing
of grass in the valley would
have an adverse affect on the
western Oregon sheep business.
