ken to the Polk countv fair.
Prizes at the county level are

compete in the state contest
during the League's annual
meeting. Top award here Is $100.
Anv woman, or man, exclud
ing professional bakers, 21 years
of age or over, are eligible to
compete. Each contestant must
use the same cake and Icing

Home Economists, Is now to be
shown on television in this area
over KIMA-TV Pasco. The short
course, pnxluced under the dir
ection of Mrs. Frances Zulnn.
clothing specialist at the Univer
sity of California, consists of
five 30 minute programs. Bv
viewing this series you will
learn how clothing design, tex
ture, line and color can express
a person' Individuality. There
is an enrollment fee If viewers
wish to participate and receive
educational material plus the
Vunsell Color Charts. However,
viewers can get a lot of good
Information even if they do not
have the materials. Call or write
the countv extension office for
information on enrollments.
Four-H clothing leaders are
urged to view the program, as
much material will be useful
to them In club work. Since the
program will he during school
hours, most 411 members will
lie unable to view the series.

4 H Fashion Clinic
Saturday, April 12, should be
reserved bv all clothing and
knitting members and leaders
for a dav of fun and learning.
A 4-11 Fashion Clinic will be
given that dav at Heppner High
school cafotorium from 9:30 a.m.
until noon. The day will be de
voted to helping members with
grooming, hair style, make up
and modeling practice. This day
has been planned to assist the
girls as they prepare for style
revue at the Countv ralr. All
4-H girls in the county are in
vited to attend. Mary Speckhart,
area agent, will direct the pro
gram for the day. Older 4-H
members have been contacted to
help with the activities.

and grooming, poise and confi
dence by participating in the
Style Revue at county fair. They
also learn to have fun as a
group. The present activity of
the Nimble Thimbles Is making

Against Dangers
Of Snow Molds

County Extension Agent
Wheat growers that have vis
ited fields which were under a
deep snow cover may notice re
duced stands due to a grey
mold, commonly referred to as
snow mold, notes Harold Kerr,
county extension agent.
The snow mold grows at a
temperature near freezing and
Is quite common In areas that
receive more snow than normal
for this area. There is no con
trol for this problem. Growers
may want to reseed areas, al
though it will be rather late in
the season before many of the
areas are dry enough to work
the soil.
Plant heaving may also have
occurred in both wheat and bar
ley fields. Heaving is caused by
alternate freezing nights and
thawing days which build up
ice crystals that lift the seed
ing plant out of the ground. If
this has occurred on any large
scale, reseeding should be considered.
Workshop Scheduled
A pattern alteration workshop
will be given In Morrow county
to ten women, members of Ex
tension Units or non-members,
who will agree to teach the
course to others next fall If there
Is Interest In the project at that
time.
Mrs. Anna Schwarzin and
Mrs. Sue Vinson, who have re
cently completed a training
course given bv Elaine Carlson,
clothing specialist from OSU,
will teach this leaders' class In
thi- countv. Dales of training
will be April 30, May 7, 14, and
21.

cessful sewing should contact
the county extension office no
later than April 15.
NimbU Thimbu 4-H Club
The first vear 411 members
are among the most enthusias
tic and determined of all 4-H
clubs. This age group has lust
been waiting for the time they
were of 4-H age.
The Nimble Thimble club Is
a group of beginning clothing
members led by Mrs. John
(Frances) Privett. This club is
unusual in that every girl in
the group has a club responsi
bility. Officers are: president
Patli Saling; vice president,
Carmen Clow; secretary, Kutti
Ann Kiethlev; news reporter and
correspondent, Kathv Schwarzin
and Kathy Wolff; scrapbook,
Kathv Marshall: songleader,
Debbv Holland. A new member
is Lisa Burkenbine, and by next
meeting a Job will be found in
the organization for her!
Beginning clothing clubs learn
basic hand stitching and ma
chine stitching. They make sim
ple garments such as an apron
or blouse. Many other factors
enter into the training of be
ginning members. Their club
meetings give them a good un
derstanding of organization and
responsibility. They learn civic
responsibility through such ac
tivities as sponsoring a Father
of-the-Year candidate.

Alfalfa Growers Alerted
To Harm of Alfalfa Weevil
Alfalfa growers in Morrow
county should be on the look
out for alfalfa weevil in their
fields, announced Harold Kerr,
county Extension agent. Alfalfa
weevil are found in most east
ern Oregon counties, and when
a heavy infestation occurs, the
first cutting of alfalfa can be
completely lost.
A new fact sheet on alfalfa
weevil is available at the Coun
ty Extension Office. It is im
portant that you learn to iden
tify the weevil and know at
what infestation level it is eco
nomical to control them.
The alfalfa weevil feed on the
new buds as they open and can
severely retard growth. A serious
infestation will turn a field sil
ver grey and practically stop
growth. Good control measures
are available.

1 teaspoon vanilla
4 eggs, unbeaten

2 cups sifted cake
flour

1 teaspoon salt
1-14 teaspoon baking
soda
34 teaspoon double
acting baking powder
PREHEAT . . . oven to 350 degrees
GREASE . . . and generously flour 2 nine-inch
layer cake pans.
COMBINE . . . cocoa, flour, sugar, salt, soda,
baking powder.
STIR . . . shortening just to soften; sift in cocoa
mixture.
ADD ... the 34 cup milk and vanilla. Mix
until flour is dampened.
BEAT ... for two minutes at medium speed, or
300 vigorous strokes by hand.
SCRAPE . . . bowl frequently.
ADD ... the eggs and 12 cup milk; blend thor
oughly and beat one minute longer in mixer
or 150 strokes by hand.
POUR . . . into prepared pans and bake for 30
35 minutes or until done.
MINUTE FUDGE FROSTING
Mix in saucepan:
2 cups sugar
14 cup light corn syrup
12 cup milk
12 cup butter
2 sq. semi-sweet chocolate (2 oz.) cut up
14 tsp. salt
Stir over low heat until chocolate and butter
melt. Bring to a full rolling boil, stirring con
stantly. Boil one minute. Remove from heat
and beat until lukewarm (120 degerees).
Stir in 12 teaspoon vanilla. Continue beating
until smooth and can be easily spread. Frost
cake.
